Default Motion Picture Association to change rating system

    http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment...ntcmp=features

The Motion Picture Association of America announced changes to its movie rating system Tuesday, saying it wants to help parents make informed decisions at the multiplex.

The new system, rolled out as the "Check the Box" campaign, will include prominent descriptions explaining why a movie received its rating. Films that might previously have been stamped PG-13 with a sentence beneath the rating will now feature those same descriptions in large type next to the ratings code.

The changes announced by MPAA CEO Christopher Dodd in Las Vegas on Tuesday come in the aftermath of explosions at the Boston Marathon and recent shooting rampages, though the former U.S. senator did not address such examples directly.

What I find offensive and what another finds offensive can be two different things. It's all about context to me. A naked woman, if it fits the context of the narrative, is okay with me but a naked woman gratuitously put in just to get an R rating so the MPAA takes their movie seriously for awards is offensive.

An F-bomb, in a believable situation, is okay. If it is thrown in when it could have easily been deleted without changing the context, that's offensive. Now, of course, if I am watching with children and told the movie has nothing offensive, that's another issue altogether.

The current code works like this:

    G - Kid's stuff.
PG - Largely replaced by PG-13
PG-13 A PG film with a small amount of R-rated moments thrown in
R - Enough nudity, violence or F-bombs that it cannot pass for PG-13
NC-17 An R-rated movie with some X-rated moments thrown in
    X - Porn

If they want to expand the system like weight classes in boxing where it reaches a point of meaninglessness, it will only serve to muddy the waters so parents will find it harder to use. If they can make the process more specific while still making it easy to understand, I'm all for it.
I miss the old Mile High Stadium.

The MPAA ratings are a joke. Check out the documentary This Film Has Not Been Rated to see how arbitrary and dumb their system is.

If you've ever seen some of the Italian films I have, you'd reconsider.
