Default Broncos' aggressive start to free agency gobbles room under salary cap

For the most part, the Broncos are finished with phase one of free agency.

Getting a newly restructured/reduced contract with pass-rushing defensive end Elvis Dumervil is their final piece of business before owner Pat Bowlen, president Joe Ellis, front-office boss John Elway and coach John Fox take off Sunday for the NFL owners meetings in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Otherwise, the Broncos as they stand now are pretty much tapped out of salary-cap room, according to two NFL sources. They are roughly $50,000 to $52,000 below league-imposed $123 million payroll limit.

If they are still under the cap for this year and are good 2 go with rookie money... Hopefully they can think outside the box, pay Doom this year, if he agrees to cuts the following years.
Thanks MO for the wicked Sig.

Until Mays, Kuper, etc get cut and a decision is made with Doom. Those 3 alone could add 7-10 mil in space.

I have an irrational love affair with Mays. I wish we could keep him as our new Keith Burns for special teams.

Well, what the Broncos did with the cap space is what it is for, isn't it? The
purpose is to acquire players who can improve the team. They did that. And,
as Coach implied, it isn't as if they can't create additional space if needed . . .

Default Here’s where the Broncos found the money to use in free agency

With all of the checks being written these days at Dove Valley it can be difficult to remember that no so long ago, like say about the time 2007 turned to 2008 turned to 2009, the Broncos found themselves one a slide toward the middle of the league’s pack in terms of raw buying power.

The back-to-back Super Bowl wins were a decade in the rearview mirror and suddenly the team’s cash reserves, those available funds to spend on up front, guaranteed money in free agency, didn’t match many of the league’s heavyweights. In fact, it wasn’t close.

And their roster showed it. They were one of the oldest teams in the league back-to-back-to-back seasons as they took chances on older players to far on down side of career bell curve and squandered away too many draft picks.

I don't think they are really hurting for cap space. As someone mentioned, they will likely cut guys like Kuper and Mays. They will also save some money with Elvis. Even if he resigns, it will open some cap room. If they get desperate, and have the up front money, they could also sign Clady to a long term deal. If done right, that could open a few extra mil in cap this season.
