I think we were assigned 10-12 novels in my modern contemporary literature class. I didn't read a single one. I don't think I even tried reading one. Passed with a C. Not proud of myself... But it's kind of the internet's fault really - both in giving me an easy out, and providing me with more compelling material than the books themselves.

I was gonna say...when I saw Buff’s name attached to this thread, I said “no ******* way.” Turns out I wasn’t wrong.
*The statements above are my opinions, unless they are links, because then they are links, which wouldn't make them my opinions, and I suppose stats aren't necessarily opinion, but they are certainly presented to support an opinion. Proceed accordingly.

Only a C? This goes beyond not reading the books. You could still get an A without reading the books.

Like I said, not proud. The C was reflective of my overall effort - I at least showed up and bullshitted through the discussions so she probably took pity on me and passed me.

My entire school got together my final semester and decided to pass me in several classes in which I had earned an F because reasons. Not the entire school. Maybe 90%.

I think I actually read To Kill A Mockingbird. That was a good one. Of Mice and Men was cool too. The Picture of Dorian Gray was interesting and I read most of it. Animal Farm was great. The Poisonwood Bible was good for the first part but not the rest of it.

I think those are the ones I read in HS.

I read Of Mice and Men on my own for no reason. Lot of Hemingway stuff. I like to read good stuff. 1984...that was probably assigned, and for that I am so grateful. I read most of it.

There is something oppressive about being assigned a leisure activity.

I'm sure the Air Force has their own version of "forced fun". Family days you're required to attend without wife or kids, Christmas parties you're required to be at, etc.

Oppressive as ****. If I *chose* to go I might've had fun, since you told me I HAD to be there.... I'd rather be at work, at least I'm getting something done that way.

I never liked reading or being told what to do. So being told I had to read made me hate reading more.

I have a lot of books that I probably will never read. I'm considering purging my collection and donating them because I feel cluttered and I think it's silly to just have a bunch of books on my shelf sitting there. I'm mixed on the idea, but we'll see how it goes. I'm going to sort them into piles of ones that i'm OK with getting rid of. A lot of them from college which I want to keep for nostalgic reasons, but nostalgia is usually a poor reason to do anything.

Just finished up Presto! by Penn Jilette which is a recount of how he recently lost over a 100 lbs and began a new healthier lifestyle after a scare with a nearly 100% blockage in his heart. I love Penn and Teller, and have read several of Penn's books. If you have ever seen their stage show, listened to their Podcast, or seen one of their many TV Shows you know that Penn Jilette is a master storyteller and funny as hell in his writing. I finished up this 340 page book over 3 days and it was probably his best yet.

It is not a diet book (he mentions in the disclaimer at the front that if you "Take any lifestyle or medical advice from a juggler - you are an @$$hole!") but rather a personal account of his journey to get healthier and is filled with great stories and asides from his journey. With sections titled things like "Just Another Fat ****" and "Eating Pizza is Voting for Hilary" you get plenty of crass and eye opening insights on what worked for him to get healthy. As someone who went through something similar about 6 years ago to get my health in check, this book was a great reminder of how hard but worthwhile it is to make a lifestyle change.

Yup for two weeks then transitioned to a whole food diet. He does still have what he calls “Rare and Appropriate” meals every month or so where he eats what he wants at birthday parties or special events.
