A fascinating book detailing the debate between Burke and Paine in the late 18th Century over political philosophy and the most beneficial course for a good government in promoting the well being and happiness of man. He believes that the root of all of our modern disputes over politics is to be found rooted in these two thinkers and their very divergent World views.

Levin is doing a pretty good job at trying to present both sides in as flattering a light as possible, which is a hard trick to accomplish. Levin also admits his own biases, which is refreshing. His contention is that these differences are real, they are profound, they remain current, and they continue to color all modern political disputes. He goes further and dismisses as naive the ideas that there aren't real and important issues at stake in partisan disputes, or that money is the driving force in these. I agree with both of those assertions.
Lol I love Paine, but I guess you are on the side of burke!

LOL - absolutely. He is my Hero. Paine...is not. When he became a devotee of the French Revolution he became In my mind almost as wicked as Robespierre, Danton, Marat, and eventually Rousseau

I loved the movie Gone Girl so much and heard the book was great, so I went and bought it last night. I'm only 50 pages but it is a great reminder of how much better books are. The story is pretty much the same so far, but the details make the story and they are awesome. If it would have shown how much he hated her and how much he couldn't stand being with her in the movie, it would have make me believe more that he killed her. Even after seeing the movie, only 50 pages in I could see how he could kill her.

Good read (so far), and if you have not seen it don't. For sure read it first.

    Thanks MasterShake!!!

I'm reading Nick Offerman's Paddle Your Own Canoe. I really like it so far. I like his brand of humor and find him to be a very interesting man.

I'm on the second book in The Passage trilogy, it's called The Twelve. Good stuff. Vampire apocalypse epic. Reminds me of Steven King's ability to hold the thread and not screw up the good vibe of a sweeping, majestic yarn about mortality.

Finished The Twelve. It was worthwhile, a book that satisfies after the excellent first volume of a trilogy, but not dialing it up a notch. This is something I'd recommend to those that grew up on King and enjoy desolation and spare landscape.

Then I started The Brothers K. It's audio stuff, so it's got to have a good narrator. The dude doing this narration, well, I don't know. I'll go back to it in a bit, but in the meantime...

Red Rising. 2/14 discs in, I am hooked.

Nice. I have a bunch of religious books in my amazon cart but I can't decide which one to pull the trigger on.
