The No. 1 rule on the practice field under the old Shanahan regime was simple: Absolutely no cell phones. Not for coaches, not for staff members (including the PR staff) and most definitely not for members of the media. Few things aggravated the old coach more than a ringing (or buzzing, for that matter) phone in the middle of a practice.
That policy carried over to Camp McDaniels, until today.
Broncos VP of media relations Jim Saccomano, a twitterer (@broncos_sacco) himself, explained the change in policy today.
Basically, the NFL issued an advisory to teams (not a mandate) to allow text communications from the practice field during practice sessions that are open to fans. The Broncos had previously been one of 12 teams, Saccomano said, that banned Twittering (tweeting? What’s the proper verbiage here?). Previously, if any reporter wanted to send out a message about what was happening during practice, he or she would have to physically leave the field. Now we just stand pat and Twitter to our hearts content should we so desire.
The new policy here makes sense. But it won’t last forever. As soon as practices are no longer open to the public, no more texting/twittering from the sidelines will be allowed. And then us reporters will have to start actually walking again. On second thought, maybe that’s not such a bad thing.
Once again, a shameless plug for The Denver Post’s Twitter: twitter.com/denverbroncos or @denverbroncos if you’re already there.
