When I first saw True Grit in the theater I felt the same. It was good, but underwhelming. At that time I hated westerns though, so I watched it the other day and I would firmly place it alongside the greatest westerns ever made. Jeff Bridges needs to do more westerns.
I don't think John Wayne is a great actor necessarily, but I think he's great at the type of stuff he did. His performances in The Searchers and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance are pretty much perfect.
The Wild Bunch.
I watched Defiance last night. An amazing story, and I thought the movie was pretty good.
I've said for many years that the best Western Actor of all time is Robert DuVall. He just seems perfect in those roles.
Let's Rid3!!!!
Duvall's best Western to me is recent. It's with Kevin Costner, & Annette Benning. It's called "Open Range". It's my favorite Western. Duvall and Costner are "free-rangers", running a free range cattle grazing outfit. They come up against a small-town, big money Land man who controls the local Sheriff, and attempts to take them out. Awesome cinematography, great script, acting, directing. It has it all.
Duvall was also in Lonesome Dove. It was a TV mini-series, and I've never seen it, but some swear by it as one of the best Westerns of all time.
Lonesome Dove was a decent mini-series, but it's far from the best western of all time. It's half western, half soap opera. It's kind of like little house on the prairie, served in a dirty glass.
