This seems to be the general consensus from long time fans of the series (i.e. old dudes like us) that the first viewing is very confusing and hard to judge. Part of it for me is that I went in spoiler free and I did kind of have in my head how I thought it should go and that was challenged at every turn.

The only thing I knew after watching it the first time that I liked some stuff and I really hated some stuff. A subsequent viewing made me realize the cool stuff was REALLY cool and it was easy to ignore the crap like the casino planet and super Leia. I still think the movie is too long. Getting rid of the Canto Bight sequence would have done wonders. Basically all it did was preach that war is bad and give them a chance to meet the kids who would be inspired by the rebellion after they visited.

Speaking of... soooo it's not the Resistance anymore? When the hell did they start using the Rebel logo and calling themselves Rebels?

Anyway (and I AM NOT comparing the two movies in quality) this film reminds me of what it must have been like to see The Empire Strikes Back for the first time. I remember it vaguely as a child and thinking it was no fun, too dark, and I hated the slow parts on Dagobah. Depending on how they finish things out, The Last Jedi might retroactively become a classic. As it stands it is better than The Force Awakens but has some serious issues that keep it from standing on it's own. I love the opening sequence with the bombers and pretty much everything from the Snoke throne room battle on.
I assumed they became “the rebellion” again as soon as they lost power (ie when the Hosnian system was destroyed and along with it, the senate). Now that they’re not in control they can be a rebellion again I guess.

I can tell you first hand that Empire was some scary stuff as a kid seeing it. It was a foreign concept that the “good guys” didn’t always win. For those of us who both loved and feared Vader it was totally epic and left you feeling a little “dirty” for thinking the evil Vader was so cool. This flick was a lot like Empire for having some twists. Leia instead of Honda with the ship would’ve made it 100x better. I can’t believe they screwed that up.

I'm going to watch it again today. I honestly think it's the Finn and Rose story. You take that basturd pile of garbage out of the film and suddenly you have enough to fully flesh out like and Rey. And honestly, too much time was spent with the whole long boring drawn out fuel situation. Basically, tone that down, remove Finn and Rose (or give them a better fricken story because they are both awesome characters) and you've got a winner on your hands.

The second half of the movie was amazing once the convoluted story got out of its own way.

Bingo. It was too drawn out and the central focus should have been Rey, Luke, and Kylo. I almost wish they would’ve let Finn sacrifice himself too. His arc would’ve came to a nice conclusion then.

Yes. They could have let Finn die and Leia as well as Luke and the central theme could have been Sacrifice. That's what made Rogue One so ******* good was just how brave they were by killing every major character in the movie. It was bold.

I was glad they didn't because honestly, Rose's line there was excellent I can't remember it exactly but basically, "we win by saving what we love, not fighting what we hate." or something along those lines. Plus I really like Finn a lot and I don't think I'd want to see him killed off even if it was in a powerful sacrifice.

You would probably love Disney if they took Robocop and made it PG as well.

They are a cancer, and so is anyone who supports this bull.

No the audiences don't...there is a hell of a lot of brigading going on right now. People signing up for 4-5 Rotten Tomatoes accounts.

Is it a perfect film? Not hardly, but the second half of the movie is absolutely amazing. The only people who hate this movie are the bitter salty fan boys who can't accept that their fan theories were wrong.

Boo frickety who man...Star wars was always kiddie. Nothing about this movie is different than anything else in the series humor wise. Nothing... You went into the movie hating it before you even watched it. You've got this preconceived motion that you were going to hate it, so of course you did.
