Yeah they left it pretty ambiguous as to whether he still had it at the end of the movie, but he threw it onto the planks they were standing on not into the shaft. If he decided to drag his 250 lb asthmatic dying lump of a dad back to the shuttle I would have hoped he could have clipped his cool ass lightsaber back to his belt first.
As far as Luke being related to Rey, I sure as hell hope they aren't. The first line from the leaked script tidbits and from the footage shown to the executives which takes place right after Episode VII is Luke saying, "Who are you?". Whether or not that is only true from a certain point of view remains to be seen, but I'd like this movie not to end with an "I am your father moment". The best theory I've heard so far is that Rey was created from the living Force (as opposed to Anakin who was manipulated into being born by Sidious and placed into his mother). A pure being of light can cast the darkest shadow, so I want her to go bad and have it be Kylo that has to redeem her.
AND THEY BETTER NOT KILL LUKE OFF.
Good, it will put some hair on her chest.
Seriously though, this is Star Wars and while it is poetry in a way I just can't deal with another desert living orphan becoming the savior of the galaxy. Rey becoming "bad" doesn't necessarily mean evil, it could be just that she loses her way and skirts the line for a bit. I think it would be much more interesting if somehow Kylo is the one that has to bring her back. My quote earlier about the brightest light casting the darkest shadow is a mythological story construct about the purest among us being necessary for the contrast of the evil we are capable of.
If we look at the Force as light and dark sides, "balance" can only be achieved by having equal measures of both. It is why in the prequels the Jedi were hunted to nearly extinction by just a few dudes pulling the strings (the whole Sith "Rule of Two") and why in the OT it was up to Luke to destroy the Empire and redeem his father and put the Rebellion on Equal footing with the Evil in the Universe. Now that the Republic is in charge and the Resistance is in shambles, what is the balance that needs to be restored? If The Force Awakened and now we are looking at the Last Jedi what is next? I just really want these movies to explore the third theme in these struggles which is not Light vs Dark, but the challenge of keeping both in check. Rey could embody that struggle with her arc and never have to die or become truly evil or truly good.

Awesome connection.
Star Wars Celebration kicks off today in Orlando (with a trailer for Episode VIII hopefully!) and this is the 40th Anniversary Panel from earlier:
I still haven't seen the second new Star Wars. I'm glad someone bumped this thread. Torrent time!
Him and Paul McCartney have been old women since the late 90's.
Either way with the Carrie Fisher memorial they paid tribute with today I am just reminded that sooner than later big icons of my childhood will star dying off. Pretty surreal to think Star Wars has been around for 40 years now.

Just an FYI if anyone is interested, the Last Jedi Panel starts at about 9 AM MST and the trailer will probably drop in around 10. I will post it here of course, but if anyone wants to stream I think that should be the timing.
