Default Alex Tanguay, prospects traded by Avs to Arizona for Mikkel Boedker

The Avalanche on Monday traded veteran forward Alex Tanguay and two prospects to Arizona for 26-year-old forward Mikkel Boedker, who is the Coyotes' third-leading scorer.

The prospects going to Arizona are forward Connor Bleackley, 20, the Avs' first-round pick in 2014, and defenseman Kyle Wood, 19, who was a third-round pick in 2014.

Bleackley and Wood were Colorado's first two picks of the 2014 draft.

Tanguay, 36, had only four goals in 40 games and was in the final year of his contract. He was not going to be re-signed by the Avs. Boedker is a pending unreistricted free agent.

Boedker is an upgrade from Tanguay, but an expensive one if he does not sign an extension with Colorado. Boedker, 6-foot and 211 pounds, has 13 goals and 39 points in 62 games. He is a team-worst minus-28, but has only 10 penalty minutes. He is from Brondby, Denmark.

Man, I loved Tanguay. He hasn't had the same Magician season as he did last year, but I love that guy. Too bad. Hope this Boedker guy makes it worth it.

    Players I want:
Jake Ferguson (Jake Butt) or Jelani Woods or Jeremy Ruckert or Cade Otten (owen daniels) at TE- All 4th rd or later.
Troy Anderson LB 3rd/4th rd (yay Timmy!)
Neil Farrell, JR DL- run stuffer- bye purcell

Back to back 3-5 losses with empty netters to seal the deal.

Avs are back to their old selves apparently.

My friend/coworker just got me a Mackinnon Jersey. It's the alt style from previous years with the plain COLORADO written diagonally along the front and the laces on top. Pretty sweet.

Well, it was a more fun season to watch than I expected based on the first 20 or so games, but the Avs simply don't have that killer instinct and don't belong in the playoffs. Hopefully the new group can gel and next season will see an improved team.

I was looking at the standings. Avs are close. Flyers and Red Wings are fighting for a spot too. I'm just happy the Blue Jackets haven't totally shit the bed like the first part of the season. Hoping to see them play the Rangers in about a week.

I can't watch this shit show any longer. Must win game at home and the avs don't look like they even want to be there. Clear which team belongs in the playoffs.

I couldn't breath those last 30 seconds.... Glad they had a decent game, but they have to find a way to stay ahead in the third....light headed...

I wish I would have watched that game instead of seeing CBJ get their butts kicked. I'm sorry to say I would have cheered the other way though.

Default Avalanche GM Joe Sakic says team won’t be active in July 1 free agency

The Avalanche will not be active July 1, when NHL free agency begins, general manager Joe Sakic told The Denver Post.

“We’re not going to be looking that day,” Sakic said. “As the summer goes on, we’ll see what good fits are. But on the July 1, don’t expect us to go after any big long-term deals. Within our own, we’re going to discuss what we have within, but outside on July 1 we’re not going to go after a big splash.”

That approach likely means the Avalanche expect big things from 21-year-old defensemen Nikita Zadorov and Chris Bigras, who both spent most of last season in the minors but offer potential in helping Colorado improve its blue line. The two 2013 draft picks are among eight defensemen under contract on the Avs roster for the 2016-17 season, along with Erik Johnson, Francois Beauchemin, Brad Stuart, Nick Holden and Eric Gelinas.

Record-setting 12 Americans taken in the first round.

Did anyone see the Av's pick? His grandpa was crying. Good stuff, man.

Default Avalanche signs Tyson Barrie to four-year, $22 million deal, before arbitration ruling

Shortly before arbitrator Elizabeth Neumeier was to issue her decision Sunday, the Avalanche signed restricted free-agent defenseman Tyson Barrie to a four-year, $22 million deal. Barrie will make $5 million, $5.25 million, $5.75 million and $6 million in the next four seasons, for an annual cap hit of $5.5 million.

The Avalanche and the Barrie camp went through a salary arbitration hearing, with Neumeier presiding, Friday in Toronto, but that didn’t rule out a side deal before the decision was announced. Neumeier officially was to e-mail the parties her decision on term and salary, with a brief summary of her reasoning, within 48 hours of the end of the hearing Friday afternoon, but there were indications the timetable might have been pushed back as the sides continued to talk.

“It’s really nice to get it done,” Barrie said from his home in British Columbia. “As you know, it was a bit of a process. Arbitration’s not fun to go through, but it’s part of the business, and I’m excited the Avalanche has shown faith in me. I’m happy to be part of this team for the next four years and try to be part of something special.”
