I don't mind the move... As a former player who's not too far removed from the ice and someone who's been with the organization for a while now, I think he's a good fit. I think the players respect him.

I agree. When you look at his record when he was the head coach, did not make a lot of sense to demote him in the first place.

I believe I called this soon after Q was fired. It may not have been here, but I know I told my dad that I thought they'd promote within and that it would be Granato.

DENVER—Tony Granato is returning as coach of the Colorado Avalanche.
The team said Thursday Granato will take over from Joel Quenneville, who parted ways with the Avalanche two weeks ago by mutual agreement.

Granato was 72-33-17-11 when he led the team from 2002 to 2004. He has served as an assistant for the Avs since the 2005-06 season.

Mike thanks for the info. I had not heard that. I like Tony a lot. I didn't like what he did with Selane, but I think he learned from his mistakes. Plus I think it took a lot of guts to recommend another coach come in when he was struggling and he stay on as a assistant. He know the Avs system and what they expect from him.

I think a monkey could have coached that team to the record they had that year. They were loaded with talent. If he couldn't reach the Cup with a team that loaded then I am skeptical about what he will do in the salary cap era.

The way he mishandled Selani and Kariya irritated me to no end. I can't remember specifics about his tenure, other than the Selani/Kariya issue, but I remember being fine with him being demoted at the time.

The knock on Granato was experiance, he has had time to sit and learn more about caoching, getting a better feel and they seem to think he is ready now. I did not think they would go this way but at the same time it is not totally out of left field.

I don't mind the move - I thought he did a pretty good job before. I must admit I'm a bit surprised though.

I still think Quenneville is a very good coach and will be behind an NHL bench next season. Hopefully Toronto's.

    Good luck to TG.

However, I dont see this as much of an upgrade IMHO

I would rather have had Ron Wilson over him, but that is just me.

You're forgetting that he played 2 seasons for the Leafs and got his coaching start in St.Johns for the Leafs farm team.

I have talked to a few people who have thrown out Granato's winning percentage as a coach in defense of the hiring. My simple question...if the FO felt that was any indicator of his coaching abilities, why was he demoted/fired/whatever?

Some say that he was young and inexperienced and that he has learned and grown over the last few years. My question, who has he learned from? Coach Q. No offense to Q, but if the team felt Q was the wrong direction for the club then why promote someone on his staff?

Why the rush? Why not let it play out, be patient, and interview some people before making a choice for ciminie sake.
