Default Brendan Lemieux, Claude's kid, a perfect pick for Colorado Avalanche

Brendan Lemieux's rise to the NHL began when he was 3 months old, when he sat inside the Stanley Cup after his father raised it. It was June 1996, and Claude Lemieux had helped the Avalanche capture the Cup in the franchise's first season in Denver.

Eighteen years later, Brendan Lemieux — a nephew of sorts to Avs brass Joe Sakic and Patrick Roy, Claude's teammates in Denver from 1995-99 — is a candidate to become the Avs' first-round selection in the 2014 draft. Sakic and Roy won't pick Lemieux at No. 23 because of their strong ties to his family, or because Brendan was born in Denver, but they undoubtedly could use a player of his ilk.

Brendan is built like his father, emotionally and physically, and Claude Lemieux did just about everything in his 20-year NHL career that ended in 2009 at age 43. The four-time Stanley Cup winner would shoot from anywhere, throw his body at anyone and chirp with the best of them. He had 379 career NHL goals and 1,777 penalty minutes to prove it.

Default Patrick Roy says Avs hoping for long deals with Paul Stastny, Ryan O'Reilly

LAS VEGAS — Avalanche coach Patrick Roy expressed optimism Monday that long-term deals still can be worked out for potential unrestricted free-agent center Paul Stastny and restricted free agent Ryan O'Reilly of the Avalanche.

"They both are very important players to our team," Roy said at the Wynn Resort and Casino, where the NHL's awards show will be held Tuesday night and where he is up for coach of the year. "I'm certainly very confident things will go well."

Starting Wednesday, teams can start calling players from other teams if they are still unsigned, even though no formal deals can made until July 1.

I never watch the awards but was so glad I watched last night. Everyone deserved the awards they won....was hoping Varly would make it a sweep but he's so important to us he's a total winner in my book.

@adater Live in Red Deer, seen him play a good amount. VERY hard to knock off the puck and very smart.

PA was just traded to MTL for Briere. we also sent our 5th rd pick too.

Tomorrow look for us to go after Niskanen and Erhoff.
    The Plan at the moment:

Draft: Trade a 3rd and 6th this year to a team to move up and get a 2nd next year (this will happen).

    Players I want:
Jake Ferguson (Jake Butt) or Jelani Woods or Jeremy Ruckert or Cade Otten (owen daniels) at TE- All 4th rd or later.
Troy Anderson LB 3rd/4th rd (yay Timmy!)
Neil Farrell, JR DL- run stuffer- bye purcell

a vet winger with plenty of playoff experience should be a good addition to the avs' mix, no?

Default P.A. Parenteau traded to Canadiens, Avalanche acquires Daniel Briere

In a surprising move, the Avalanche traded one forward (P.A. Parenteau) to the Montreal Canadiens for another forward (Daniel Briere) who both are slated to make $4 million this coming season.

The Avs also acquired a fifth-round draft pick in 2015 from the Canadiens. In Briere, the Avs get a 36-year-old former big-time point producer whose production has slid steeply the last couple of seasons. But what he lacks in size (5-foot-9, 179 pounds), Briere has always made up for in toughness and character.

"Daniel is a veteran who brings experience to our hockey club. We're looking forward to him joining our team," Avs executive vice president Joe Sakic said in a statement.

I dont really like the trade but yes that is the plan. He is our first 35+ contract so that is interesting to see. His contract is up next year but he is a vet and does have lots of Playoff experience which we have little of that. He is also back with Talbot.

As long as we keep stats and Rino, ill be fine with it. And if we can land Erhoff or Niskanen then I will be very ok! Very Very ok! however, our D will to me still be rather soft. I wish duncan siemens would pull his head out of his ass and be the beast mean defenseman we drafted at 9 overall for.

I had read that we gave up our 5th. Somewhere there is a mistake. I will be much happier if we got the 5th also. Then the trade will be quite good.

fair enough, but IMO the addition is more significant to a roster as young and unproven as ours than it would be for, say, LA or chicago. . . we have plenty of talent and fresh legs in our forward group, but i thought our lack of playoff experience really showed against a more mature wild team. . . i would love to sign iginla, always been a fan of his. . .
