Default Matt Duchene has talent, leadership to wear "C" for Colorado Avalanche

This is not a slight of Gabe Landeskog.

Repeat: THIS IS NOT A SLIGHT OF GABE LANDESKOG.

But Matt Duchene should be the Avalanche's captain.

There is no more popular player on the Avalanche. There is no more popular player in the NHL among former Colorado Rockies (the hockey team) coaches who now wear Elvis-in-Vegas-style suits on a national stage.

Don Cherry on Saturday night called Duchene the best player in the league right now. Don Cherry — who has worshiped at the altar of Sidney Crosby since he came into the league, and rightly so — thinks Duchene is a better player than him right now.

I thought the whole column made a lot of sense. And he went out of his way to point out that he was praising Duchene more than he was slighting Landeskog. Duchene behaves more like a captain, and has more experience to embrace the role. I thought it was a really informative piece personally.

I just read the quote that was posted so dont have a clue about the entire article. I was only questioning why anyone would be worried about it while the team is doing well. I could see if the team was losing...

Do any of you remember WHY the "C" was given to Landeskog? Do you remember who's choice it was to give it to him? MILAN HEJDUK.

I think the article is stupid and so is his opinion. Duchene might be a leader and he might be one of the best players in the league, but that doesn't mean he's deserving of the C...obviously...since all Landy did was win the Calder prior to getting it. Forsberg was a leader on and off the ice and he NEVER wore the C for the Avs. Neither did Ray Bourque. Neither did Adam Foote prior to his return to the team from Columbus. Neither did big time locker room guys like Hinote, etc. To even suggest, at this point with as well as the team is doing, that someone else should be the captain is friggin ridiculous and insulting to Landy no matter how many times or how big of font he says it's not a slight to him.

Reading that article pissed me off. I love Duchene and am glad he's doing well, but you don't just get handed the C. Joe Sakic was the team captain for YEARS and he wasn't a vocal leader. Joe was quiet in the room. He led on the ice with his cool demeanor, respect for the game, and super consistent production over a long, long period of time. Landeskog is young, but he's our leader now and I see no reason to think or suggest that anyone else should be.

Landeskog was just handed the C as a 19 year old after one season in the NHL. It's not like he paid his dues for years and years. Not only that, but Sacco was in charge, and him and Duchene never saw eye to eye.

I mean, I don't necessarily think the Avs ought to make Duchene the captain, but it was an illuminating piece in terms of how Duchene has developed into one of the team's main leaders. And it seemed like a pretty reasoned argument that didn't detract from Landy.

That's what I'm saying...Landy was chosen by the team captain at the time (Hejduk) as the new captain and Sacco okayed it. Hejduk played his entire career with or for Joe Sakic. If Hejduk felt Landeskog was fit to be a leader at 19, I will sure as hell take his word for it.

I thought it was a POS fluff piece that was nothing more than a space filler.

Yeah, but I think Dater might have been pointing out that Duchene has matured and now conducts himself like a captain. I don't think it was a fluff piece so much as he was giving us a glimpse as to how Duchene conducts himself behind the scenes. Again, I'm not advocating stripping Landeskog of the captaincy, just saying that Dater makes some interesting points about Duchene's maturity and development.

That's fine. He can applaud Duchene all he wants and I'm fine with that, but don't do it to the discredit of another player. His disclaimer at the beginning was bullshit. And obviously not every great leader becomes a captain, in case you didn't catch that point a few posts up.
