He had 20 points in 15 games for the Avs when they traded for him so the potential is there, but I wouldn't bank on it happening again.

Frickin' garbage game.
The thing that struck me was the feeling of the Penguins inevitably coming back to take the lead even when we were up 3-1. They had about 100x more offensive pressure and you knew it was only a matter of time until they tied it up. Didn't know they would manage 5 more goals - embarrassing.
Also, we got screwed on the Varlamov trade... There are no two ways around it. The guy is not worth what we gave up to get him.

Varlamov isn't the problem. Shitty defense giving up too many untimely scoring chances, not taking control of rebounds, making awful defensive zone turnovers, and the offense sucking for the most part hurts the team worse than anything. It's last year all over again except the downward spiral just started a lot sooner. Just like the second half of last year, it doesn't really matter who the goalie is right now because nothing else is going the way it needs to to put the goalie in a position to win the game.

I'm not saying a top flight goalie would solve all of our problems, but just listening to the Versus crew the other night, they don't seem sold on him at all. He gave up at least one, arguably 2 soft goals in Pitt.
Maybe he'll be an above average starter over the long haul, but for a first and a second round pick the expectation is that he walks in as a clear cut franchise goalie. Right now he just looks average.
But I agree there are other problems to address as well.
Sherman and Sacco need to be fired. The Avs need a legitimate 80-100 point per season guy and defensive help. This is getting frustrating.

The Avs play not to lose, but end up losing anyway. They don't play to win. They're not aggressive and they don't take risks. They play the same conservative, low risk/low reward brand of hockey no matter if they're winning 3-1 or losing 3-1. How can the front office look at how the team is playing and be content? Change needs to happen. The Avs need to go out and spend some money on some players and coach an aggressive, high tempo style of hockey. We're less than two months in to the season and already seven points out of a playoff spot (not counting tonight's game but the Avs are down 2-1 as I type). In the Western Conference, if you're not competitive all year, you're not gonna be able to make a push from the bottom late in the season and miraculously clinch a 7 or 8 seed. Not anymore anyway.
On the plus side, I am very happy to see Stefan Elliot playing tonight. The kid is gonna be special.
Man is that kid on fire. First he stops Hemsky and then scores his first goal.....Finally get to be at home and enjoy a game.

A couple of things...
The Avs have no offense. The Avs defense scored the game tying goal, the game winning goal, and the goal after the GWG. Second, great game by the Avs defense. Elliot is a stud and congrats to him for getting his first goal in the NHL in awesome fashion and for having it be the GWG. Third, Stastny is alright shooting the puck so long as the other team doesn't have a goalie in the net. That dude is playing with Milan Hejduk and Matt Duchene and still plays like he's out to lunch.
Great win. I'd like to see the Avs play an entire game like they played the third period tonight. Sounds like there was a good crowd there tonight. I was watching the game on CBC because I'm tired of Haynes and McNab, but the crowd sounded loud, especially in the third.
And Pola, I'm sure that helped make your birthday just a tad better!
Thank you SR......
Elliot was the 1st star. Love this kid.
I did hear that almost all the points were from the D and that's not a way to keep winning.
It was a great way for me to enjoy my Birthday. Will take it and enjoy the heck out of it. Thought about getting tickets, but I'm still running pretty empty so I just got a few auto's from the Oiler kids....![]()

Nice!
BTW, before the Edmonton Bronco Fan guy comes in here and complains, that hit on Taylor Hall was 100% clean. Unfortunate that he got hurt, but it was a clean hit. Looks like a separated shoulder.
Loving watching the game right now. It's nice to see the Duke, Gabriel, OReily line really working.....![]()
