Ole Miss does the same thing. They claim 3 national titles at their stadium even though they have never been voted #1 in either the coaches or AP year end poll.

Supposedly, there was no official national champion until the 1950s and there were no media rankings until the 1930s so a lot of the national champions of the 1880s-1930 are total supposition based on undefeated seasons. From the 1930s-1970s, there were multiple media polls which often disagreed and became more confusing when AP crowned their national champ after the bowl games while UP crowned theirs before (the bowls were thought of as "exhibitions" for many decades).

Princeton is the unofficial king of the undeclared national champions but Alabama and Michigan also claim their share (as do others). Some say the Aggies did this just to keep pace with Bama.

Yeah...because the Longhorns are modern day angels when it comes to media fluff like this.
