The Denver Nuggets have exercised a $30 million option on forward Paul Millsap's contract for next season, bringing back a key player for the franchise's pursuit of a Western Conference title, league sources told ESPN on Saturday.

Denver can keep Millsap, hold onto its $9.2M midlevel exception and still stay out of the luxury tax next season.

Millsap, a four-time All-Star, averaged 12.6 points and 7.2 rebounds a game for the Nuggets. Denver (54-28) had the second-best record in the West and reached Game 7 of the conference semifinals against the Portland Trail Blazers.

Denver will bring back Millsap for the final season of his three-year contract at $30.3M, have available their $9.2M mid-level exception AND still stay under the luxury tax. Denver is loaded to compete for the Western Conference title.

While the rest of the NBA did their best to entice the league’s stars in free agency, the Nuggets went about the business of taking care of their own.

Nuggets point guard Jamal Murray agreed to a five-year, $170 million max extension late Sunday night, according to a league source, ensuring Denver’s core of Nikola Jokic, Gary Harris and Murray remains intact for years to come. The deal will kick in for the 2020-21 season and run through 2024-25, when Murray will make $36.6 million, according to ESPN cap expert Bobby Marks.

The deal can’t become official until the NBA’s moratorium ends on July 6.

Nice to see them get Murray locked up before a weak free agent class hits next year. I believe that keeps him around until at least the 2024 season. Add a solid player with the MLE, MPJ, and Bol to what we had last year and this team is ready to compete for the championship.

I wouldn't be opposed to them using one of their exceptions on him much as they did for Thomas last year.

He could probably do more than Lyles.

That might steal minutes from MPJ I suppose but I would think he might see more time at SF.

Anyone else excited to see MPJ play in summer league? I expect him to show some rust, and flashes of superstar potential. Is he a young Kevin Durant, or just another overhyped college star? The hype is there. Tomorrow is the first look.

Nuggets rookie Michael Porter Jr. suffered a left knee sprain during a minicamp scrimmage Wednesday night and is unlikely to play in Las Vegas Summer League, a league source told The Denver Post.

It’s not expected to be a long-term issue, and the Nuggets see no need to rush him back to the court. Porter Jr. has looked excellent over the last few weeks as the Nuggets have conducted 5-on-5 scrimmages, and buzz had been mounting about his professional debut.
