Where Has All The Gold Gone?

The San Francisco 49ers are tied first, for most Super Bowls won by a team. 5 Super Bowls, it’s an amazing accomplishment. But, they haven’t won a Super Bowl since 1995. In fact, they haven’t even had a winning season since 2002. Losing records have become a regular thing for this team, and this year looks no different. The 49ers have lost 5 straight games following their 31-10 home loss to New Orleans. The 49ers are currently 2-5.

    So what can be done?

Well it’s simple, VERY simple. For starters they will need to fire Mike Nolan and trade Alex Smith. Unfortunately for 49er fans that won’t solve all the problems, because they still have Denise DeBartolo “know nothing” York and John “cheap” York as owners. The two owners are strangling every last breath of out this franchise, they really need to go.

Even if those things DID happen, the 49ers would still have major work to do.

Let’s face it; the 49ers need to start from scratch, again. Their previous attempt failed, their team is hopeless. Minus Larry Allen (LG), Joe Staley (RT), David Baas (C), Frank Gore (RB), Vernon Davis (TE), Nate Clements (CB), Patrick Willis (ILB) and Bryant Young (DE) the whole team needs new players. That’s 8 players that should stay out of the 22 offensive/defensive players. Frankly, it will take a few years before the 49ers faithful will see any sort of success from their team.

Alex Smith is consistent, consistently bad. He was never worthy of the 1st overall pick, at best he is a questionable 1st round pick. There is no doubt that the 49ers should have waited to get a Quarterback from somewhere else. The 49ers don’t have the best receivers, but none of that matters when your Quarterback is throwing balls that simply cannot be caught. Alex Smith gets rattled way too easily. Jake Plummer or Michael Vick had a better pocket presence than he currently does. The 49ers should just get what they can out of him through a trade, the quicker they attempt to rebuild the quicker they will have at least a respectable team again.

But, to get better the 49ers will also have to get rid of Mike Nolan. Mike Nolan couldn’t even coach a pee wee team to victory. Time and time again, 49ers fans and players have to endure poor decisions from Mike Nolan. Many beg the question; does Mike Nolan even know how the game works? There are plenty of examples of his incompetent play calling, but let’s just take ONE of the recent examples. Alex Smith is a hopeless Quarterback, who played much longer than he should have because of an injury yesterday, against the New Orleans Saints. Knowing that he has Frank Gore running for him, one of the better running backs, why on earth would Mike Nolan force Alex Smith to throw the ball 43 times? This was entirely Mike Nolan's decision.

Mike Nolan is a good coordinator; but unfortunately for 49er fans he’s just not a good Head Coach.

What about the 49ers poor ownership problems? Despite recent attempts to redeem himself from his “cheap” reputation, John York will always end up being a no good cheap owner. He doesn’t care if the team is 0-16, as long as he doesn’t have to spend a lot of money. He fired the best head coach he’s had in the last 10 years, Steve Mariucci, mainly because he wasn’t prepared to give him a better contract. Let’s face it; John York and Denise DeBartolo York are not very good owners.

The 49ers are planning on building a new stadium, but what is the point? If John York is going to fund it at all, then it looks like 49er fans will be sitting on the floor to see their team play. How about paper goal posts? Those probably wouldn’t cost John York much.

What else is there to say about this team? A big bust at Quarterback, playing the wrong players on the offensive line (e.g. David Baas should be starting), not the greatest receivers, poor defensive line with the exclusion of Bryant Young, poor secondary with the exclusion of Nate Clements and possibly Michael Lewis, add to that poor coaching and a poor ownership.

At least the 49ers can watch bruising runs from Frank Gore, and outstanding tackling from Patrick Willis in the mean time. Frank Gore is already one of the better backs in the league, and rookie linebacker Patrick Willis is already one of the best tacklers in the league. You would be right to think that Patrick Willis could turn out to be, the best defensive player, to come out of the 2007 NFL Draft.

However, the 49ers are far from being where they want to be. Give them a couple of centuries and they might be able to pull together a winning record, maybe………

He's 35, so he's not got much left in terms of playing career.

That's going to be a problem for the 49ers, their best offensive lineman will retire soon.

That guy is huge! Which reminds me, according to a 2005 study, 56% of NFL players are clinically obese...I would imagine that percentage for lineman, are much, much worse.

What really amazes me about Larry Allen is his strength. In my opinion he is the strongest player in the NFL, he is just amazing. He is one of the greatest offensive linemen in my opinion.

Another strong point of his, is that he plays just about every offensive line position. When you can move around like that and still be one of the best offensive lineman IN that position, it makes you ALOT more valuable to a team.
