People like Kenny Chesney need to thank Garth Brooks. He is the one that put country music on the scene as a mainstream musical genre. Country has always had it's legends and it's fans, but Garth took the genre to a whole new level. Without him, some of the artists that claim to be country would be Pop or Contemporary artists struggling on other labels.

Alternative country is an underappreciated genre.

Whiskeytown and other Ryan Adams projects, Uncle Tupelo, Wilco, Gillian Welch, Emmylou Harris, First Aid Kit, Trampled by Turtles, etc. Country music fused with alternative sensibilities, including folk and bluegrass and americana stuff.

CCR, Red Hot Chili Peppers make my top 10, A-chains and Metallica top 20.

I always thought NIN sucked though.
