Default Do you like the new news ticker?

Ok, I added the news ticker Saturday or Sunday (can't remember which). Do you guys like it or find it annoying?

One note, whether we keep the ticker or not, in the next couple weeks I am going to work on beefing up the news feed that drives the News forum and this ticker, to reduce the number of dupe stories (which is hard, because many sites carry variations of the same story) and also hopefully increase the number Broncos news stories.

I like it myself. Meant to PM you earlier and tell you so, but didn't get to it.

I like it, it's convenient. You can read any thread and it's right there at the top of the page.

Most webpages are too busy with flashing, blinking, scrolling objects that divert the attention of viewers. That's why I voted to kill it. Or you could perhaps run it only when there is breaking news.
I miss the old Mile High Stadium.

No. Extremely tacky. Scrolling sideways text was cool in about 1999.

What I would prefer, rather than the news stories, which have always been available, since this is the 50th Anniversary of the AFC, I think it would be neat to scroll the names of the greatest Bronco players since day 1.

I'm tempted to go with option 3

But actually, I quite like it, it's not glaring and in your face, and it doesn't take up too much space.

It's ok, but I would like it better if it scrolled about 3 times as fast.

I made it faster, but as you can see it gets much 'jumpier', which is why I compromised on the slower speed when I was playing with it.

Strike that, I put it back. It is really hard on the eyes when faster, as it gets really jerky. You know how it is with '90s technology.

It's probably in my head, but it seems like the site is operating slower for me with the ticker.

In honesty I find it kinda distracting... and maybe just a tiny tad annoying... I liked it better without it.

Just a quick question... would it be possible (without a ton of work ) to make it so that users who don't like it could disable it while those who do like it can still keep it? (sorry if this is a dumb question...)

Not a dumb question at all. It is a vBulletin mod/plugin created by a third party. I saw that that was one of the features requested -- allowing individual users to choose whether or not to see it.

Off the top of my head, I think there are two options for me to provide that option.

First, create a new theme (like the work friendly) that had or doesn't have the ticker. The down side to that is arguably I would have to make two new ones, one standard and one worker friendly. The second downside is that every time there is a vBulletin upgrade (every two months or so), any modifications made to the themes/templates, like adopted Broncos and a lot of other more subtle or behind the scenes stuff, needs to be manually reapplied to each template (header, footer, main post area, etc.).

Second, create a check box in options, like where you can choose whether or not to see political sigs, and then modify the code (or navbar template) with an "if....then" block that only shows it for those that want to see it. I don't think this would be too hard, and the navbar template is already one that I have to manually reapply changes to after each update, so it is not too much more work at upgrade time.

If I did make it a user option, than the question is whether or not it should be shown to non-registered people, as we have at least three times as many people that lurk as login.
