Default dog owner with a pet cat in the future

hi, I want to get a cat real bad and I have the opportunity to get a kitten in a couple of weeks. As many of you know, I have a dog. He weighs around 90 lbs and is kinda like Lenny in Mice and men. Means well, but has killed a time or two. He likes to chase cats, but never catches them. as many of you know, I used to raise rabbits and he has killed them too. he has taken out nests of baby bunnies when they have emerged in the wild. In fact this will occur soon as I noticed a wild rabbit nest with babies in the back yard. the question/concern is with the new cat. do you think it can work after a while? I think he will be excited at first, but I think he could eventually grow to respect the cat. I'm thinking about putting in a cat walk in a few rooms so the cat can escape if tormented. anyway. let me know what youi think if anything.

Nut, I've got 3 that I'll send you. I just need to come up with a convincing story as to why we no longer have cats.

I like cats nut. I'm not a "dog person". If I owned a 90 pound dog of any variety, I would not get a kitten. I'd get a mountain lion.

If you can discipline your dog to not eat the kitten, then get the kitten. I had my Russian Blue when I lived with my old room mate in Texas who had an English Mastiff that weighed 140 pounds. He got the dog trained to where it wouldn't chase the cat and break furniture.

I'm going to offer real advice first, and bull shit advice later.

First: When you get your new kitten, keep it in one room for the first couple of days. If you are going to make a cat run in one of the rooms, that is where I'd start. The cat needs to get acclimated to its new home, and it's best to start with one room at a time.

Second: Introduce Shultz to your kitten, but keep the dog on a leash. The cat is going to rear back and hiss at the dog. If the cat swipes at your dog's nose and makes contact, that's good. That will teach your dog who is boss and getting (that close) is no bueno. Then the next day, bring Shultz in again, still on a leash. If he jerks like he's going to want to chase the cat, you need to discipline him. You can train him to not chase the cat.

Third: Bring the cat out of his safe place, but and this time Shultz doesn't have to be on a leash. The room is the cat's room, not Shultz's. The rest of the house, that's Shultz's and putting him on a leash where he is usually free to roam will confuse him. If he chases the cat, you need to discipline him. Put him in his kennel, or outside, or whatever you do that he knows he's been punished.

And so on: This song and dance is going to take some time. Your cat will get acclimated to Shultz faster than he will get used to the cat. He made it through obedience school, and didn't get kicked out, so he can be taught. You do have to be consistent with this new training.

A reminder: DO NOT LEAVE THE CAT AND DOG ALONE TOGETHER. At least not until Shultz understands that the cat is boss and is not allowed to chase it. Don't allow Shultz in the cat's room. That negates the "safe place" if he goes in there.
    This space available for lease.
