Thread: Server outage this afternoon

I use a third party linux administration company to manage the server, as I don't have the time or experience to do it myself (to keep server costs down, I lease an unmanaged server).

There has been a problem with a server monitoring utility, which keeps track of the amount of ram used, server load, web hits, etc. I put in a ticket for this to be worked on.

Somehow, the tech that was working on this uinstalled or disabled the caching software that is used to speed up vBulletin. I was paged when the site went down, but neith I nor the tech initially figured out why the site was down. I finally figured out it was a problem with the caching software, and disabled it's use in vBulleting, getting the site back up, just without using the caching software.

The site was down for about an hour, and I am working with the support company to get the caching software reinstalled properly, along with a few other things that seemed to get messed up at the same time. Hopefully, there will be no more, or only very brief, outages as this is getting resolved.

That was almost catastrophic. I was about to jump, but then it came back online and all was well in the world.

Who uses linux? What a noob.

The Forums have been timing out like crazy on me for the last 10 minutes or so. I'm not sure if it's related to the new server or not, but I haven't had that issue in the past and I'm not having problems with any other site.

Just thought I'd let you know.

Running really slooooooooooooooow today for me - anyone else?

I've had that issue about 50% of the time since the switch.

I was about to ask the same question. I'm not a computer person so I'm clueless to the reasoning.

I have also had this problem, also yesterday, but I was not sure it was not on my end as we have had some pretty good rain storms in Westminster the past 3 days.

Since making the switch to the new server, it seems there have been daily slowdowns, sometimes lasting 15-30 minutes, sometimes lasting hours. I am working with both the server management company and the place I lease the server to try and figure out what's going on. When it is running good, it is very fast, but then it get's into this mode of running slow, even though there is no load on the server.

Must be slow mode right now...

Picked up now, loading quick here.

They are going to try replacing the motherboard. If that doesn't do it, then we might be looking at an OS reinstall or something.

One of the problems with moving to a new server. Even though it is much more powerful than the last, it is dangerous to move from a stable serer/config.
