John Madden retires from broadcasting
Hall of Fame coach and most honored broacaster in history says it's time
NEW YORK - NBC Sports Chairman Dick Ebersol announced today that John Madden, Hall of Fame coach and the most honored broadcaster in sports television history, has decided to retire from broadcasting.
Madden issued the following statement today:
"It’s time. I’m 73 years old. My 50th wedding anniversary is this fall. I have two great sons and their families and my five grandchildren are at an age now when they know when I’m home and, more importantly, when I’m not…
It’s been such a great ride… the NFL has been my life for more than 40 years, it has been my passion – it still is. I appreciate all of the people who are and were such an important part of the most enjoyable, most fun anyone could have… that great life with the teams, the players, the coaches, the owners, the League… my broadcasting partners Pat and Al… the production people and the fans …is still great… it’s still fun and that’s what it makes it hard and that’s why it took me a few months to make a decision.
I still love every part of it – the travel, the practices, the game film, the games, seeing old friends and meeting new people… but I know this is the right time."

Good. He should have retired years ago.
I guess with Brett Favre's retirement, no one else to dote over.
Woody Paige just said on ESPN that John Madden changed the way we watched football.
I agree, I would watch it with the sound muted.
Man, what is Frank Caliendo going to do? Madden has been his bread and butter....
Otherwise, I love Madden but agree it's time. He rambles on too much at times. Though the memories are great!
No more "This defense is about the best I've ever seen. They can really get to the quarterback. Bam, bip, bop."
Next week, "This team has a great defense, they might be the best in the league right now..."
Now, if we can only get Chris Berman to hang it up.
Thats the best news Ive heard since the season ended.
...Classic Madden when he use to fly off the handle!

I love Madden, if for nothing else he is entertaining to listen to.
One night he'll use the phrase "hash mark" about 50 times. The best (or worst depending on your point of view) was when his word of the night was "penetration"
"That DE sure gets great penetration on the LT"
"The QB is feeling the pressure from the penetration"
(not exact quotes, but you get the idea).
I'll miss him.
The best powder is pure, dry, light fluffy Colorado powder!
he was great at what he did.... his age caught up to him for the last few season thou... it was fun mr. madden but now you can enjoy the gams from your bus not the booth
WE WILL MISS THIS GUY BY WEEK 10
AFTER WEEK 10 I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR THE CUTLER HATERS SPEAK UP!
Looks like I am in the minority, but I really liked Madden as an announcer.
