Default The D needs to get tougher. This draft can help.

The Denver defenses have been built on speed, quickness and athleticism for the better part of a decade. Some years it worked better than others. This team is in a transition and I think the mentality of the defense should also be re-evaluated.

There are quite a few prospects who intrigue me due to their athleticism, like Everette Brown and Aaron Maybin. The 3 USC LBs also make people gush. But w/ them I see more glitz and glamour than I do hard nosed, "tough" players. Now I'll admit that Rey brings a certain attitude, but I do question his toughness when faced w/ equal competition.

Guys like BJ Raji, Tyson Jackson, Clint Sintim and Ron Brace have the mentality and style of play that I want to see in Denver.

Now IMHO, the best case draft scenario is one where Raji does drops to us at #12 and Tyson Jackson lasts til #18...neither are likely, however. Raji is unlikely to slip out of the top 10 and San Diego will need to replace Igor. I don't see Jackson slipping by em at #16.

Now a trade scenario that could still help us would be with either Philly or Detroit...both of whom would love to have a TE like Scheffler. Philly holds the #21 and #28 picks while Detroit has the #20 and #33.

    PICK 18=900
    PICK 20=850
    PICK 21=800
    PICK 28=660
    PICK 33=580

Now the point values are basically equal between Philly (1460) and Detroit's (1430) picks.

Now I know that folks chuckle at the tought of these types of trades, but in this instance we may have something that these teams may want...especially Philly. Detroit doesn't gain much by trading with us. Philly needs to begin rebuilding their offensive line, but Tamp and Detroit are in the way. If the Lions take Stafford, they are gonna look hard at a OT at #20. There are a few good ones, but they will go quick. Philly may be desperate and have traded up in the past for the lineman they covet. Add to that the fact that they really need a TE (Scheffler) and I think obtaining #21 and 28 is possible...even if we have to sweeten things with a later or future pick.

A deal w/ Detroit would be more realistic to just send Scheff and a later pick for the #33. Either way...

Sooo...back to the new defensive mentality. If we could somehow get a deal done for a 3rd pick w/ in the top 33, we could realistically have a shot at:

    Tyson Jackon, DE, LSU
    Clint Sintim, OLB, Virginia
    Ron Brace, NT, Boston College

...all before our own second round pick.

BJ Raji, Tyson Jackson, Clint Sintim and Ron Brace
We could probably get Tyson Jackson and Clint Sintim in the 1st round. I would like to grab Ron Brace in the 2nd round, but he will be a first rounder.

Get Chip Vaughn in the 3rd, he'll give our secondary that toughness it's lacked for a few years

    - Thanks to Roddoliver for the sig!!

would we be able to sign 5 picks in the first 33? plus 4-5 more draft picks?

as I said in another thread, I'd look at moving back from #12. that could be a prime location for someone targeting a QB or a LT. #12 for Philly's 21 and 53 would give us two picks in each of the first three rounds. it's not quite 5 in the first 33, but it's still pretty nice.
    If not me, who?

I'm curious... were you suggesting that Philly would give a first rounder for Scheff?

Like Scheff, but he would need to play at least one FULL season before I consider him a 2nd rd.

    My exact quote was:

Philly may be desperate and have traded up in the past for the lineman they covet. Add to that the fact that they really need a TE (Scheffler) and I think obtaining #21 and 28 is possible...even if we have to sweeten things with a later or future pick.

First off, giving the #18 for #21 is not equal value. So if we make that deal, we have $ in the bank so to speak

Next, we would obtain their #28 for that remaining currency from the first deal, Tony Scheffler and a later or future pick. I don't think Scheff is worth a #1, BUT he's more proven than Pettigrew who is projected in round 1. So I could see a team like Philly giving up the #28 for Scheff and the ability to move from 21 to 18.
