Default Wish List Mock version 3-4.3

Been a very busy week for the Denver FO. Lots of holes to fill all of a sudden. No big surprises, but we will need to use FA smartly and effectively. I believe the D should be built from the trenches back. Unfortunately, Chris Canty may overvalue himself and/or be resigned to the idea of reuniting w/ Parcells in Miami. Since the swith to a 3-4 is imminent, we will need players brought in w/3-4 experience. I am hoping for 1 from each level of the defense. So I now shift from Canty to the following 3 players:

Mike Wright, DE, New England Patriots
    Bart Scott, ILB, Baltimore Ravens
    Bryant McFadden, CB, Pittsburgh Steelers

1 player from each level of 3-4 defense and 1 player from each of the best 3 3-4 defenses in the NFL.

    Now to the draft...

    ROUND 1
    Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU
    6'5" 290

With the Free Agents holes that have been filled, we have some flexibility at #12. Dline still needs to be addressed and Raji is unlikely to be available for us. Only the value here is at DE. Jackson is climbing the charts of draft prognosticators. Perfect size for 3-4 DE and a bulky 4-3 DE we've been lacking for when we go 4-3.

    ROUND 2
    Ron Brace, NT, Boston College
    6'3" 324

Now Brace brings true value for our 2nd round pick. The 3-4 can't run right w/o the NT, so we have to get a legit one early. Brace is big, strong and mean. He can keep the OGs of of the ILBs.

    ROUND 3
    Connor Barwin, DE/OLB Cincinnati
    6'4" 255

I like Ayers here as well, bt Barwin is more athletic and produced more in 1 year as a DE than Ayers did in 4 years at Tennessee. Moss and Doom can fight for the pass rushing OLB spot and Barwin can hold down the other side.

    ROUND 4
    Jasper Brinkley, ILB, South Carolina
    6'2" 255

Our current ILBs consist of Andra Davis, Spencer larsen and DJ Williams...and DJ is no lock to play inside. At some point, a ILB will be drafted. We are likely to have 2 excellent options in round 4. Brinkley and DJ's brother, Worrell Williams, are both projected as 3-4 ILBs and have a lot of experience vs top level competition. Brinkley has the perfect body for the 3-4 and dominated vs SEC competition. he was the heart and sould of the Gamecock defense. Has had some injuries, but when healthy...he is a player.

    ROUND 5a
    Chris Clemons, S, Clemson
    6'0" 208

With the signing of Fields and the potential of Powell, I think we'd be OK at NT (assuming we land Brace). Clemons is a very fast Safety who could be taught under Dawkins, another Clemson alum, and pair with Barrett when the time comes. he also has a solid frame.

    ROUND 5b
    Quan Cosby, WR, Texas
    5'11" 205

Older than most rookies (26), but to me tht means he's likely more mature. Had a HUGE game in the Fiesta Bowl vs Ohio State so his stock may rise.

    ROUND 6
    Zach Potter, DE, Nebraska
    6'7" 280

I have no issue w/ Potter in round 5, but he may last to round 6. Anotherbig body for the DLine. Great motor and work ethic and learned from a great defensive mind in Bo Polini.

    ROUND 7a

    A.Q. Shipley, C, Penn State
    6'1" 297

Since Nalen has retired and our current Center is on the wrong side of 35, this position is a definite need. I know we have the kid from BGU, but he would still need a backup or used as depth at OG. AQ has a nasty streak that this OLine could use. He held down the middle of the PSU line for 4 years and rarely had a bad game. Another late round OLine gem for the Broncos.

    ROUND 7b
    Ian Johnson, RB, Boise State
    5'11" 212

Not a hot prospect, but is at the very least intriguing. And who says you can have too many RBs?

I like it. A little high imo for Jackson but covered the basic needs for defense. I wouldn't be upset if it went like this.

Is Wright a DE or NT?

I'd also get vet Safety help via FA in case Woody and/or Barrett struggle. We're young enough at S and have bigger needs up front. Give the youngsters a season to show what they can do and if they fail we can draft replacements in 2010.

The Pats has done well with bigger, stronger backs who move the chains and don't drop the rock. His RBs can also catch. Brown fits that mold. He may not be explosive, but he gets the job done. We'll still need to find a multi-purpose RB, but w/ Brown and Hillis, our bruisers will be set.

I like Brown but with Hillis showing he's not just a FB and being able to catch the ball as well as he does I think he'll be the early favorite with Bell and Young as backups getting 5-10 carries each.

I think we had way too many injuries at RB to not bring another guy in. Looking at how NE likes to use the run, Brown seems to be the best fit in my estimation.

Couple of things. I think this would be a good draft, but...

A.) A second NT...I think we at least take ONE in free agency, if not two.

B.) Pat White...doesn't fit the New England Patriots mold. Not that McD will continue with that mold, but from this viewpoint, White doesn't fit much of anything the Patriots have done.

I see a guy more like Brandstater, from Fresno State, as the 7th round guy.
