    Default Russell makes history

As they had hoped, the Oakland Raiders and quarterback JaMarcus Russell made history together. Unfortunately for both sides, it is not the type that either wanted.

Russell’s holdout reached 34 days on Wednesday –- one more than former No. 1 overall pick Orlando Pace’s holdout reached with the St. Louis Rams in 1997.

Now, if and when he signs with the Raiders, Russell’s holdout will mark the longest one in the common draft era by a No. 1 overall pick that eventually signed with the team that drafted him.

I wonder how long he will take to finally sign.

Another 8 months to the draft isn't it?

Doesn't he go back in if he doesn't sign for the Raiders?

He does indeed. He'd probably get drafted lower and lose money but it would be worth it to get out of Oakland!

Wouldn't it be funny though if Oakland drafted him again!

I heard them talking about this on Sirius NFL Radio yesterday and it blew me away. I had no idea that no rookie holdout (number 1 picks only???) was longer than this.

Well with Al Davis running the show, anything's possible

I think I'd take a year off if the Faider's had picked me as well

Are asking number one picks in general or the overall number one pick?

Remember quarterback by the name of Kelly Stauffer being selected in the first round by the Cardinals ( I think they were still in St. Louis at the time) and they couldn't him signed and he ended up going back into the draft if I remember correctly.

My understanding is that it's they are stuck on the language of the contract not on monetary issues.

They are talking about #1 overall picks only.

I thought this was going to say he signed a 25 year deal worth $1,000,000,000 and be the first one to sign a deal worth a Billion dollars.

i did hear somewhere that russels contract was written to include the al davis' secret herb and spice recipe due to its anti dying properties...

perhaps it would be a good investment on the raiders side to sign a qb for some 25+ years...

I also heard he wanted to include all of Al's white pajama suits in the contract and Al would have to start wearing a suit and tie!!!!!

The Raiders should seriously think about giving in. Think about it, Russell is NOT a polished quarterback like Brady Quinn is (You know I'm right about this BQ haters) and from what I've heard it's the Raiders fault for not getting him signed in the first place because they want most of his money in incentives? So if Russell doesn't have a contract he won't practice with the team, which is an absolute need if your a future quarterback so JUST SIGN HIM to what he wants!
