Thread: Breaking Bad

My wife and I started watching this show when it debuted but something happened(ai don't remember exactly but life intervened) and we stopped watching.

Well, on my brothers orders I started Netflixing it last weekend and now I remember what an amazing show it is. Holy shit, it may very well be the best drama in the history of television.

It's somewhat strange for me to watch because Bryan Cranston played Hal in my favorite sitcom of all time, Malcolm in the Middle. I loved him in that show and it's somewhat weird to see him in this role, but I completely buy into him as Walt "the Chemist" which just speaks to his immense talent as an actor.

I honestly believe Bryan Cranston is up there with Pitt, DeCaprio, and Daniel Day Lewis as one of the finest actors in the world and his role as Walt just strengthens my position. He is an amazing actor and this show is "art" at it's very best.

In the later seasons (the most recent one especially) I almost forget that he was even the dad on Malcom. The latest season is easily one of the best seasons of any show I've ever seen period.

Chaz, I couldn't agree more. When Mastershake wanted our top five list for television, I only had one on the list. Everything else pales in comparison.

The only problem is I kind of wish this last season was THE last one. I just don't see how they can end on a better note. I'm sure they will find a way though.

They film it here in albuquerque..
But ive yet to watch an episode,i hear its good

Well. . . now I know what I'll be watching on Netflix for the next couple of months.

That's how I got hooked on the show. I was watching 3 episodes a night.

I've been watching an episode of "The Wire" a night for the last couple of months. I've missed some nights, but about one per night.

Now I only have two episodes left to go, so I've been wondering what to start with next. "Breaking Bad", "Justified", or "Rome".

Now I know for sure i'll go with "Breaking Bad".

I haven't seen The Wire, but I loved the old Homicide:Life on the Streets series done by the same guy. I'll have to give that a look.

Yes, it's like Homicide but better. Awesome show.

The Wire was incredible. I liked how each season focused on a different aspect of the story from a unique prespective. Its also cool that the dude who played Omar is on Boardwalk Empire as Chalky. He's a great actor.

I hadn't seen either until I decided to give it a shot.

Now I also want to see "Homicide:".

It's very well done. The last season (5), kind of jumps the shark some. ..but it's still very good.

Right. I had no idea about that aspect, but had I known, it would have attracted me to the show more.

Season 1: Drug Trade/Homicide.

Season 2: Docks/Smuggling

Season 3: Politics/corruption

Season 4: Schools

Season 5: Media/reporting.

While each season accents those topics, there is a story that intertwines throughout. It's just that each season another layer gets added on, and you see the problems of Baltimore played out from a slightly different perspective.

Before I saw The Wire, I never thought that I would say this, but I agree. Homicide: Life on the Street is an amazing show. I can't watch it in a marathon. Every episode feels like it's movie-lengh, so it's the sort of show that needs to be savored, not simply consumed. Three Men and Adena is one of the best episodes of any procedural ever filmed.

And the Wire is better. Amazing.

In that vein, NTL - if you're gonna chain-watch a show, I'd recommend Breaking Bad over Justified. It's not that Breaking bad is easily consumable, but you're going on a trip down the rabbit hole and as Morpheus would say, "wondering just how deep the rabbit hole goes."

When you set a guy on fire and throw him off a cliff, you don't want a bunch of breaks if you're trying to fully appreciate the way down.

So I wait til the season is over then watch each season of Breaking Bad in it's own weekend. Can "calamitous" be an enthusiastic adverb? Good stuff.

But don't skip Justified. One of my favorite shows going, and I watch that one as the weekly episodes air. There's a lot of nuance in word and expression to be savored, and the season long plot is less important than the character studies being etched.

Both of those are great shows, in completely different ways. Enjoy em.
