I had a situation not too long ago where some book club that I don't remember signing up for had "membership dues" taken out of my account. My bank reimbursed me, with the agreement that if the 3rd party is proven right, then the credit applied to my account would be taken back out. The 3rd party was in the wrong so I got to keep it.

Unless you were a co-signer, or agreed to take on responsibility of the account when you paid those past due balances, then you should have a case.

Them taking my money caused so much shit to go wrong for me.
Don't just call lawyers. Call your credit card company and let them know what's going on. Call your state's Attorney General office and Dept. of Consumer Affairs and call the BBB and file a complaint.

    Make life miserable for them.

My guess is that you're ultimately going to need to get reimbursed by the cable company or your friend, as this doesn't really constitute fraud. You gave your friend permission to use the card (7 months ago) - thereby authorizing the cable company to use the card.
