I've figured out that it's to do with gap "responsibilities", and that a "gap" is obviously the space between opposing O-linemen that a back might run through.
but when someone starts talking about a DT playing a 3 gap technique I'm lost. How the hell can one guy cover all that real-estate?

0,1,2,3,4,5 Techniques

0 Technique= head to head with the Center (responsible for both A gaps)
1 Technique= Lined up in the middle of the a gap (between center and guard)
2 Technique= Defensive lineman head to head with the Guard
3 Technique= middle of B gap (between guard and tackle)
4 Technique= Head to head with the offensive tackle
5 Technique= Outside shoulder of the Offensive tackle

the ones I put in bold are the Techniques that can be used in a 3-4 scheme.... just depends on the type of 3-4


Here is what West had to say... figured it would be easier to merge it to 1 post...

"6 would be inside shoulder of the TE (or inside eye)

7 would be head up the TE

8 would be outside eye of the TE

9 would be a LB who played in a space outside of the end man on the line in a twins look (doesn't matter if its a TE or not). The LB would walk out and split the inside receiver and the end man on the line"
