I have a computer that uses a lithium battery. I understand that NiCd batteries develop a "memory" if recharged often. Do lithium batteries do the same? I've had my computer for just under 2 years and this is the 2nd battery that has become toast. I am getting a replacement one in the mail (thank you warranty) so I wont be without a battery long.
How often do batteries generally last?

T nailed it.There is something you can do that might revive it. If your laptop has a battery refresh/maintenance utility, it will do it for you, but you want to fully charge it, then unplug it and run it completely down, and then FULLY charge it again.
The best thing you can do is not leave it plugged in too long (this can burn out the battery and the charger), and run it low until you must charge it.

may not be the batt instead the charging system

Just to say thanks Frau for starting this thread.. and to everyone who contributed.
My laptop battery has been running out of power quickly too, so I'm refreshing it as advised in this thread.
[Battery isn't a Dell (laptop is a Lenovo, ie Thinkpad) but I have been abusing it by leaving it plugged into the mains..]
