James Davis will likely be there until the third, maybe top of the fourth round...Yes, alot of what happened in Clemson hurt his numbers. But overall that will hurt him, even with a top notch combine he will at best go top of the third round.

Brown may not have had the best competition, but he is a Div. I athlete and not Ivy League or Div. II, so it is fair to say he relatively fits a pro-style offense with a zone blocking scheme. Add in that he has more yards overall then any back in the draft, he will be a hot commodity in the second round.

Shonn Greene is the riser of the group and will with a good combine solidify himself as a second round prospect. You are correct in your assesment of him though, while I do like him...I don't see Denver taking a halfback till later and there is one kid in the group of second rounders with a leg up...

Javon Ringer, a dark horse if you will and considered a legit option in the second round, he could fall because lack of need, along with other issues. None of which are production, Ringer has been a solid tailback for the Spartans, but he has a leg up over the rest in this area and the reason why is...McDaniels is a Big Ten guy (former Spartan coach) Turner is a Big Ten guy (former Buckeye coach and alumnist). Now people may overlook these facts, but never discount them in the end.

There are a good number of tailbacks with a similar leg up with regards to the Denver staff:

Chris Wells (Ohio St.) - Half of our coaches are Ohio boys, especially Turner!

Javon Ringer (Michigan St.) - Already stated why above...

Glen Coffee (Alabama) - This is who I feel we draft in the fourth or fifth round, talented kid who needs to be coached. Not specifically elite material but has the tools to be a threat...plus Nick Saban, McDaniel's boss before Belichick is the boys' coach!

Kory Sheet (Purdue) - Late round pick, he also has ties to the Ohio St. program, could be added for depth and special teams.
    - Doesn't bother me what people think, the mere fact what I think seems to bother others speaks volumes about them more then myself! -

None. With Murray, Spiller, and Best likely in the 2010 draft, we should just focus on defense this year and take one of these guys next year.

I will add this to this thread.. Mc Kid came from a system that did not place a HIGH priority of Running the ball.. the most any of his RB had while he was in NE was about 825 yards in a year..

their offense was primarily a passing offense.. and running enough to keep the D honest.
so frankly I do not see the drooling over high choice running back when we have so much other MUCH higher priorities..

remember that mikey is now at home watching his palace being finished.. therefore any talk about RB is totally premature..

Not at all. I would be glad if they drafted Wells. Id also be glad if they drafted Raji. I think either choice is very justifiable.

    Players who hurt their stock...

James Davis, RB, Clemcon - Davis' stock dropped in 2008, partially because he was misused in Clemson's East/West offense early in the year. His running ability hasnt been bad in Mobile, and he might just turn out to be a nice one-cut-and-go runner in the NFL. However, Davis' pass protection skills are awful. He has decent bulk (5-11,207), but his inability to even get a hand on linebacksers coming in blitz drills did not inspire coaches to leave him on the field for play-action.

And that’s why Davis will be around later. You can’t leave him in for pass-protection.

That’s okay – unless your team likes to pass a lot and has a complicated blocking scheme, like ours.

Davis can’t start for us as a rook with his current blocking repertoire.

We could start Hillis and use a bad-blocker like Davis in a 2-back set, but in passing situations it would have to be Hillis until Davis figures out the protections.

Unless our OL is just so good that no one can get through, I guess.

UA Senior Bowl Q&A: Clemson RB James Davis
    By Chris Steuber
    Scout.com NFL Draft Analyst
    Posted Jan 23, 2009

It's hard to find another running back in Mobile with the statistical success Clemson's James Davis has enjoyed over a four-year career, and with that said, NFL scouts have taken notice. Scout.com’s Chris Steuber spoke with Davis about his week in Mobile, where he received a lot of interest from two AFC West teams. Find out which teams inside.

The Senior Bowl is a chance for the top senior prospects to come together and compete in front of a multitude of media and NFL scouts. And for Clemson’s James Davis, it’s a chance to prove that he belongs among the top running backs in the draft.

After sharing the backfield with the dynamic C.J. Spiller the last two seasons, Davis still posted incredible numbers (385 carries for 1,815 yards and 21 touchdowns) and has a lot to offer to a team at the next level. At 5-foot-11, 207 pounds, Davis is a solid running back with good quickness and cutback ability, but he still has some work to do in pass protection.

In this Scout.com exclusive, NFL Draft Analyst Chris Steuber asked Davis about his week in Mobile, which teams have shown an interest in him and if he regrets not declaring for the draft after his junior campaign.

Chris Steuber: What has your experience been like at the Senior Bowl this week?

James Davis: It’s been a good experience; it’s a chance to get more exposure. It’s a chance to experience what the NFL level is all about.

CS: How have the practices this week compared or differed from what you’ve been used to at Clemson?

Davis: The tempo of practice is much faster; it’s something that I’m not used to just yet. But, I like the feeling of it. I’m glad they’re using the system we ran at Clemson; they have the same play calls and everything. We did the same things at Clemson that we’re doing here, so it’s helped me out a lot.

CS: I’m sure you’ve been approached by a lot of teams in Mobile. Have any teams in particular seemed to show more interest in you than others?

Davis: A couple of teams have shown a lot of interest. The Denver Broncos; I’ve talked to a lot of those guys around here. I also met with the New Orleans Saints a couple of times. They just want to see what you know about the game. But those two teams definitely stood out to me.

CS: Denver sounds like an interesting destination for you. Your game is similar to former Broncos running back great, Terrell Davis. How do you think you compare to him and can you foresee yourself in Denver next year?

Davis: That’s my type of guy. With my last name being Davis and my style of play, I think I’m a Terrell Davis type of player. I’d definitely like to go there if I could. I know a couple of guys on the team. I think I’d fit well.

CS: Did the Broncos and Saints just conduct background checks on you, or did they get more involved?

Davis: They all do the background checks. They want to know everything about your family history; you have an idea of what they’re going to ask you. But you also know when a team is interested, because they will ask you to draw up your favorite run play and explain it, as well as your favorite pass play and explain the protections. If teams ask you those questions, you get a sense that they’re really interested.

CS: Were the Broncos and Saints the only teams to ask you to draw up plays?

Davis: No, the Minnesota Vikings did as well. But the San Diego Chargers guy really picked my brain. That was interesting.

CS: A lot of chalk talk with San Diego?

    Davis: Yes sir.

CS: Do these interviews with the teams give you a head start going into the Scouting Combine, where all you really have to focus on is your workout?

Davis: Oh, yeah, I think they do. The teams here [at the Senior Bowl] get an up close look at you live and making contact, so when you get to the Combine, they will look for something specific during your workout. This week has been a big help.

CS: With draft day three months away and knowing what you know now about your draft status, do you have any regrets about not leaving school early and taking advantage of a higher draft grade?

Davis: No, I don’t have any regrets. If you look at it, I think I made a good decision to go back. We just didn’t have the year we wanted to have. But, I was able to mature and become a much more complete player. So, I think I made the right choice by going back for my senior year, no matter where I’m drafted.
