The Green Bay Packers have reached an agreement in principle with Dom Capers to become the team’s next defensive coordinator, coach Mike McCarthy announced at a news conference Monday.

Capers replaces Bob Sanders, who was fired two weeks ago along with five other assistant coaches, including four on defense.

Capers, who was a special assistant to Bill Belichick with the Patriots last season, has 23 years of NFL coaching experience: defensive backs coach, Saints (1986-91); defensive coordinator, Steelers (1992-94); head coach, Panthers (1995-98); defensive coordinator, Jaguars (1999-2000); head coach, Texans (2001-05); special assistant, Dolphins (2006) and defensive coordinator, Dolphins (2007).

The only defensive coaches to keep their jobs from last season’s staff under Sanders were assistant head coach/linebackers Winston Moss and defensive quality control coach Joe Whitt Jr.
