Default Peppers Asks Panthers to let him go

Defensive end Julius Peppers let the Carolina Panthers know he is looking for a change of scenery.

"The front office has been informed of my desire to explore opportunities with other NFL teams following the expiration of my contract next month," Peppers said in a statement released by his agent Carl Carey. "At this point in my NFL career, I am seeking new challenges that will allow me to grow, develop and reach my personal potential on the football field.

"I strongly feel that making a move at this time is in my best interest. I appreciate the entire Panthers organization and am thankful for the seven seasons I've spent with the team."

The Panthers have the option to franchise Peppers, which would mean paying him nearly $17 million next season.

"Julius is firm in his decision that he needs a change," Carey said. "He feels that he can thrive in another system. While he has been selected to four Pro Bowls and designated as an All-Pro during his career, he feels that he has yet to develop to his full potential. This is the case of a great player who seeks to become an elite one."

I'd like to see the Broncos in the market for Peppers but only if they stay in a 4-3. And only if he wouldn't break the bank which is doubtful.

Denver would be a nice place of change for Mr. Peppers.

I'll bet they still franchise him. It's a nice PR move on his part though, to make the Panthers look like the bad guys if they do.

yep. . . he can say all he wants, but at the end of the day if they want to keep him, he won't be going anywhere. . .

dumb move on his part, IMO. . . if he's just trying to avoid the tag, his effort is probably futile and won't make carolina a more comfortable place for him to be if they do tag him. . . and if he actually wants to leave, it's an even dumber move-- carolina's one of the better teams in the league, and they're clearly on the upswing. . . where's he going to be any happier?

this absolutely should have been handled behind closed doors, and the fact that it wasn't says that he's just grandstanding for the media. . .
“When we do find that guy, we’ve got to have the continuity on the offensive side to where we can train him and develop him and get him there. This is our fourth offense in probably three or four years. Quarterbacks need to be developed. You don’t find one ready-made. We got to have a solid system in place for when we do go after whatever guy it may be, a young guy or a trade or whatnot.”

They'd be wise to tag him and then trade him. Get something of value for him. If we stayed with a 4-3, I'd gladly trade our first round pick and Moss for him.

I still say stay w/ the reasonably priced FAs. I definitelty wouldn't pay him AND give up a player and first round pick.

That's assuming we stick with a 4-3. If we do that, we know Moss isnt going to work and we'll never find a player with Peppers impact in the first round. I'd have no problem making that trade

Although I prefer to build thru the draft and bring in reasonably priced pieces via FA, I'd be cool seeing him in Denver and would be okay paying him. I still wouldn't wanna pay him AND use a #1 pick.

But what are we going to use that first round pick on that would be a better solution? I know it's pretty much irrelevant since it seems we are going to transition to a 3-4...but I just dont see us finding anything in round 1 that would equate to Peppers skill set

If we are going to a 3-4 defense then first order of buisness has to be finding a nose tackle. At least that's what I think.

I agree...I just dont know how thrilled I'd be about spending the #12 pick and the money that goes with that pick...on a player whose job is to halp other guys make plays.
