Default Walter Football 3-Round Mock (1/8/09)

    Walter updated their mock.

    1. Detroit Lions: Matt Stafford, QB, Georgia

JAN. 8 UPDATE: It looks like the Lions will have a decision to make with the No. 1 overall pick, but it won't be between a quarterback and a left tackle. It's pretty much a given, whether Lions fans like it or not, that a signal caller will be chosen. The decision will come between Matt Stafford and Sam Bradford.

Reports indicate that barring injury, Bradford will declare after the UPS-sponsored final winter practice game. Stafford has the stronger arm and higher upside, so he'll look like the more lucrative choice. However, if Bradford has a brilliant game against Florida, that could propel him atop Detroit's draft board.

For now, I'm going Stafford. That could change in my next update. We'll have to see what happens on Thursday night.

DEC. 31 UPDATE: Still Matt Stafford. I've seen a few mocks with Sam Bradford on top, but I don't think Bradford is coming out. He's just a red-shirt sophomore, and Roger Goodell just announced that there won't be a pay decrease next year.

For more on the Stafford-offensive tackle debate, check out one of the past few entries from my 2009 NFL Draft Mailbag.

DEC. 25 UPDATE: Despite numerous e-mails from Lions fans insisting that the correct course of action would be drafting an offensive tackle, I'm still calling for a quarterback. Detroit needs a face for their franchise. They can't get a quarterback with Dallas' selection, but they'll be able to grab a tackle with that pick.

Also, Lions owner William Darth Clay Sidious Ford doesn't really care about winning. He just wants money. What brings in more money than a rookie signal caller? Everyone in Detroit will be lining up to buy the new Matt Stafford jersey, especially if he appears to be as promising as Matt Ryan.

PREVIOUS UPDATES: I'm not saying a left tackle isn't a possibility, but like the Falcons last year, the Lions need a face for their franchise. Right now, that face is Matt Millen, even though he was fired a few months ago. When people think about the Detroit franchise, they think about how Millen helped ruin it.

The Lions can get a quality tackle with Dallas' choice or in the No. 33 slot. Assuming most of the junior quarterbacks remain in school, they won't have the chance to secure a top-rated signal-caller in the 2009 NFL Draft.

NOTE: For the record, I do not have Tim Tebow, Mark Sanchez, Nate Davis or Colt McCoy declaring. If Tebow and McCoy come out early, they could be targeted at Dallas' choice.

    2. St. Louis Rams: Andre Smith, OT, Alabama

JAN. 8 UPDATE: No surprise that Andre Smith declared for the NFL Draft. He won't be downgraded for his suspension in the Airborne Formula Sugar Bowl. Michael Oher could be chosen here, but I went with Smith because the Rams need an upgrade at right tackle until Orlando Pace moves on. At that point, Smith could shift over or just stay at his position.

DEC. 31 UPDATE: Still Andre Smith. Smith was suspended for Alabama's winter practice game against Utah for talking to an agent. I guess that was Smith's announcement right there, huh? It'll be no surprise when Smith officially declares for the 2009 NFL Draft.

DEC. 25 UPDATE: It should be noted that if the Rams and Chiefs lose this Sunday, they would flip a coin to decide who drafts No. 2 overall.

Some mocks have Aaron Curry going this high. The Rams definitely need a strongside linebacker, but I can't see one going in the top three.

PREVIOUS UPDATES: It's been widely publicized that the Rams were ready to pounce on Jake Long if he slipped past the Dolphins. That's understandable, as the injury-ridden Orlando Pace (yes, he's hurt again - what a surprise) will turn 34 during the early stages of the 2009 season, while oft-penalized Alex Barron looks like he's getting benched in favor of guard Jacob Bell, yet another bust acquisition by the Rams. St. Louis needs to draft an offensive tackle as early as possible.

    3. Kansas City Chiefs: Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma

I'd like to preface this pick by saying that this 2009 NFL Mock Draft is based on what I think will happen; not on what should happen.

If I were running the Chiefs, I'd continue to build around Tyler Thigpen. Thigpen did a remarkable job as the full-time quarterback, commanding Kansas City's offense to 21.6 points per game since Oct. 26. I know he was guilty of a lot of turnovers, but this was essentially his rookie year. He'll continue to get better.

However, I don't think Kansas City's new front office will be able to resist someone of Sam Bradford's caliber. Reports indicate that Bradford is set to declare for the 2009 NFL Draft unless he gets injured in the UPS-sponsored final winter practice game against Florida. Depending on how Bradford plays, they could be switched in my next update.

Pick change; previously Brian Orakpo, DE

    4. Seattle Seahawks: Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech

It's pretty much a lock that the Seahawks will choose Michael Crabtree with this selection. Bobby Engram turns 36 in January, and it looks like he won't be back with the team next year. Matt Hasselbeck needs a dominant weapon to work with. Crabtree undoubtedly fits that description.

    5. Cleveland Browns: Aaron Curry, ILB, Wake Forest

With the hiring of Eric Mangini and the continued use of the 3-4 defense, it looks like this selection will come down to one of three players: Brian Orakpo, Aaron Curry or Everette Brown.

The Browns need help throughout their linebacking corps, so either one of the three would make sense.

I'm saying it'll be Curry, who will be an instant upgrade in the middle of the 3-4. Orakpo played poorly in the Doritos Fiesta Bowl, while Brown at No. 5 is a bit of a reach right now.

    6. Cincinnati Bengals: Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss

I find it remarkable that the Bengals finished the year on a 4-3-1 run. With Ryan Fitzpatrick, Cedric Benson and an inept offensive line that allowed 51 sacks running the show, how did the Bengals win more than two games? Marvin Lewis - Coach of the Year!

In all seriousness, the Bengals need to improve their pass protection if they want to contend next year. With Carson Palmer coming back from his elbow injury, Cincinnati cannot afford to have him get hurt again.

    7. Oakland Raiders: Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia

What was up with the Raiders this year? One week, they look completely horrible. The next, they're debacling playoff-caliber squads like Tampa Bay. What gives?

JaMarcus Russell has been really inconsistent this season. Some may blame that on his work ethic, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, and suggest that his receivers suck, while his offensive line couldn't block a couple of kids running toward an ice cream truck.

I argued Taylor Mays earlier, and he's still an option because of his 40 time and Al Davis' penchant for drafting defensive backs. Dating back to the 1998, he has gone that route six times with his first selection. Also, remember that Michael Huff has been benched this year.

    8. Jacksonville Jaguars: Jason Smith, OT, Baylor

David Garrard's interception total has soared from three to 13 in just one year. But don't blame him. He was knocked down more than any other quarterback this season. And according to the sacks totals allowed by NFL left tackles, Khalif Barnes was one of the league's worst, surrendering 7.5 sacks.

Jacksonville must take care of its franchise quarterback. The team desperately needs to upgrade Garrard's blind side.

    9. Green Bay Packers: Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State

Green Bay has major problems in its secondary. Charles Woodson had to move to safety this season, and it appears as though he's staying there. Woodson turns 33 soon, so his days at corner are pretty much numbered. Meanwhile, Al Harris told the media that he probably won't be back next year. Tramon Williams played well, but the Packers don't really have anything else at corner, unless you want to count Patrick Lee, who couldn't even get on to the field in 2008.

    10. San Francisco 49ers: Everette Brown, DE/OLB, Florida State

If you look up the word "bust" in the dictionary, you'll see a picture of Manny Lawson, right next to Robert Gallery and Ryan Leaf. While Parys Haralson evolved into a dependable pass-rusher, Lawson has compiled six career sacks in 32 games. Terrible.

It's time for the 49ers to move on. Everette Brown would be a nice solution; he fits the scheme and he finished the year with 21.5 TFL and 13.5 sacks.

Pick change; previously Taylor Mays, S

    11. Buffalo Bills: Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas

After such a hot start, who would have thought that the Bills would once again end up with the No. 11 pick? It's not a good time to be a Buffalo fan right now.

One of the team's huge weaknesses this year was its lacking pass rush. Buffalo finished with 24 sacks on the year, and no player had more than four. I know Aaron Schobel missed most of the year, but they had similar problems even when he was in the lineup.

Though he struggled in the Doritos Fiesta Bowl, Brian Orakpo had a brilliant senior campaign, finishing with 15.5 TFL and 10.5 sacks in 11 games.

Pick change; previously Everette Brown, DE

    12. Denver Broncos: Taylor Mays, S, USC

Mike Shanahan was fired, and Wade Phillips wasn't? What's going on here?

Pick a position, any position. Denver needs help everywhere, and I mean everywhere on defense. Their disgraceful performance against the Chargers prompted me to write the following in my Week 17 NFL Review page:

It's official. Denver has the worst defense I've ever seen. Worse than the Lions. Worse than the Rams. Worse than the Chiefs. They stink. Everyone on that defense needs to retire immediately to keep from embarrassing their family members even further. I'm utterly shocked Mike Shanahan doesn't onside kick it every single time. Shanahan might as well give the opposing offense a shorter field. They're going to score anyway. Why not have them take less time off the clock?

The Broncos have to go Best Player Available, and that would be Taylor Mays.

Pick change; previously James Laurinaitis, ILB

    13. Washington Redskins: Eben Britton, OT, Arizona

The Redskins have major problems at right tackle. Jon Jansen, who turns 33 in January, is playing on his last legs. Eben Britton would fit in well on the right side, and could potentially slide over to the blind side once Samuels' time is up.

    14. New Orleans Saints: James Laurinaitis, ILB, Ohio State

It's going to be tough for the Saints to retain Jonathan Vilma. Should they extend Vilma or re-sign him prior to the opening day of free agency, they'll be forced to forfeit this selection. They can always re-sign him in March and shift him over to weakside linebacker, however.

Regardless, New Orleans really needs an upgrade at middle linebacker. The way I see it, this selection is either James Laurinaitis or Brandon Spikes unless Taylor Mays drops.

Pick change; previously Rey Maualuga, ILB

    15. Houston Texans: William Moore, S, Missouri

Defensive end is definitely an option here, but Houston's secondary has been an abomination for years and has always missed a ball-hawking leader. William Moore can be that guy. Michael Johnson is also a major option, as is Vontae Davis if Dunta Robinson is let go.

    16. San Diego Chargers: Rey Maualuga, ILB, USC

Duke Robinson is probably the default guy for the Chargers, who really need help on the offensive line - but not if Rey Maualuga falls. Maualuga would look great in the middle of San Diego's defense. The Chargers' middle linebackers aren't bad, but there is definitely room for improvement.

Pick change; previously Duke Robinson, G

    17. New York Jets: Brandon Spikes, ILB, Florida

The Jets have collapsed defensively late in the year, so they could be looking for the best player available at any level. That would be Brandon Spikes, who would form a lethal combination with David Harris at inside linebacker.

    18. Chicago Bears: Michael Johnson, DE, Georgia Tech

The Bears really need help at receiver, and with mega-talents like Jeremy Maclin and Percy Harvin on the board, choosing one of them is a possibility. But I doubt Chicago does that. The Bears will upgrade their strengths - the offensive line and defense - before anything else.

It sounds weird to say this, but the Bears need help at defensive end. Prior to playing the Rams, who count more as a Big XII team than an NFL squad, starters Alex Brown and Adewale Ogunleye had just five combined sacks in 10 games. Mark Anderson, meanwhile, recorded only one sack. Chicago needs to upgrade its pass rush.

Everyone talks about Michael Johnson not performing up to his physical talents, but the athletic end recorded 15 tackles for loss, seven sacks and seven passes broken up.

    19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia

When Cadillac Williams went down with yet another injury, I immediately thought of giving the Buccaneers a running back at No. 19. With Earnest Graham coming off injury, Warrick Dunn turning 34 and Cadillac a virtual unknown, Tampa Bay really needs help at running back.

Knowshon Moreno is a steal here. He and Chris Wells would be top-10 prospects if the need for running backs hadn't diminished.

    20. Detroit Lions: Ciron Black, OT, LSU

See, Lions fans? Waiting until No. 20 to draft an offensive tackle isn't THAT bad. If Detroit goes tackle No. 1 overall, and no other junior quarterbacks declare, the team will once again be stuck with Jon Kitna, Daunte Culpepper, Drew Henson, Dan Orlovsky and Mike McMahon.

The Lions surrendered 52 sacks in 2008. They desperately need a dominant left tackle, allowing Jeff Backus to slide inside.

    21. Arizona Cardinals: Chris Wells, RB, Ohio State

The Cardinals have nothing at running back. Edgerrin James is a few years away from needing a cane, while Tim Hightower does way too much dancing instead of just hitting the hole. Arizona's inability to run the ball will be exposed at Carolina.

Besides, when a top-10 prospect like Chris Wells falls to you, it's a no-brainer to take him, right?

    22. Philadelphia Eagles: Duke Robinson, G, Oklahoma

The Eagles are going offensive lineman with at least one of these picks. That much we know for sure. Unfortunately, all the top tackles will be off the board.

They'll be fortunate if Duke Robinson slips to them. If Shawn Andrews doesn't make it back from his mental illness, the Eagles will need a new right guard. And if he does, Robinson will play at left guard, allowing Todd Herremans to move outside.

Pick change; previously Brandon Pettigrew, TE

    23. Minnesota Vikings: Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois

I really want to give the Vikings an offensive tackle, but with all of the top-tier players at that position off the board, Minnesota could look to address its second greatest need, which is cornerback. Cedric Griffin has had an up-and-down season, and Minnesota simply needs more consistency in its defensive backfield.

    24. New England Patriots: Clint Sintim, DE/OLB, Virginia

Bill Belichick added a young inside linebacker to his roster last April. He may look to upgrade the exterior this time around.

The Patriots struggled to put pressure on the quarterback at times (31 sacks) and Mike Vrabel, though still dependable, will be 34 in August. Something has to be done about this.

Pick change; previously D.J. Moore, CB

    25. Atlanta Falcons: B.J. Raji, NT, Boston College

Atlanta has done an incredible job rebounding off its disastrous 2007 season. The team barely has any holes left on its roster, but one glaring one is at nose tackle, which is the main reason why they couldn't contain Pierre Thomas, prompting Chris Berman to debacle us with his abysmal French accent. The Falcons were so bad against the run that they couldn't even keep Old Man Edgerrin James in check.

Pick change; previously Terrence Cody, NT

    26. Miami Dolphins: D.J. Moore, CB, Vanderbilt

Andre Goodman has improved over the year, but the Dolphins still really need help at cornerback. Miami finished just 18th against the pass, according to the yards-per-attempt pass defense rankings.

Pick change; previously Victor Harris, CB

    27. Baltimore Ravens: Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri

Mark Clayton has started playing really well lately, but with Derrick Mason, 35 on Jan. 17, a year away from hitting free agency, it's time the Ravens begin developing their next No. 1 receiver for Joe Flacco.

    28. Indianapolis Colts: Peria Jerry, DT, Ole Miss

Both sides of Indianapolis' run defense has to be addressed. Defensive tackle has always been a problem for the Colts, especially after the Ed Johnson marijuana scandal. I could see the Colts taking the best available player in terms of a running back, defensive tackle or offensive tackle.

    29. Philadelphia Eagles: Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State

According to 610 WIP, the Eagles tried to deal for Kellen Winslow Jr. prior to the trade deadline. If they're so desperate for a tight end, they have to take one early in the 2009 NFL Draft, right?

It's no surprise the Eagles wanted Winslow so bad; L.J. Smith dropped five passes (two of which were touchdowns) and was whistled for a false start against the Rams. After that, he got hurt. I have no idea why Andy Reid kept this bum around.

Pick change; previously Phil Loadholt, OT

    30. Pittsburgh Steelers: Alex Mack, C, California

The fact that the top guards and tackles are off the board shouldn't deter the Steelers from drafting a lineman. They need all the help up front that they can get.

Alex Mack, whom many consider to be one of the top center prospects in a very long time, could be next in the line of great centers who have played in Pittsburgh.

Pick change; previously Duke Robinson, G

    31. New York Giants: Greg Hardy, DE, Ole Miss

This pick really depends on what the Giants do with Mathias Kiwanuka once Osi Umenyiora comes back. If they bring Kiwanuka back to strongside linebacker, they'll likely take a defensive end in Round 1. If they keep Kiwanuka up front, they'll choose a linebacker like Clint Sintim or Brian Cushing. Wide receiver is also an option.

    32. Tennessee Titans: Trevard Lindley, CB, Kentucky

Next season will be Nick Harper's final year on the Titans. Harper is currently 34 years old, so Tennessee will need to find another corner to take his place pretty soon. Trevard Lindley is one of the best players available at this spot.

    33. Detroit Lions: Brian Cushing, OLB, USC

The Lions need help everywhere, especially on defense. Why not add a stud linebacker to the stop unit? After all, a guy named Paris currently starts there. I guess Millen was too busy blackmailing William Clay Ford to notice all my Paris jokes last year. Not that there's anything wrong with being from Paris.

    34. Kansas City Chiefs: Max Unger, C, Oregon

More than half of Kansas City's roster needs to be upgraded. You can include the center position, currently occupied by Rudy Niswanger.

    35. St. Louis Rams: Patrick Chung, SS, Oregon

Corey Chavous was just benched... in favor of Todd Johnson. Ouch. Chavous will never live that day down for the rest of his life. As you can clearly see, the Rams need tons of help at the strong safety position.

    36. Cleveland Browns: Donald Brown, RB, Connecticut

I seriously think Jamal Lewis could be the slowest person on the planet right now. If he ran the 40 in 13 seconds or more, I wouldn't be surprised at all. The Browns desperately need a better rushing attack for Brady Quinn.

Pick change; previously Clint Sintim, DE/OLB

    37. Seattle Seahawks: William Beatty, OT, Connecticut

With Walter Jones turning 35 soon, it's time for the Seahawks to draft their left tackle of the future. That could be William Beatty, whose stock has soared late in the year.

    38. Cincinnati Bengals: Connor Barwin, DE, Cincinnati

The Giants have shown us that it's all about getting pressure on the quarterback. The Bengals finished the year strong, but they still had major problems pressuring the quarterback.

The Bengals signed defensive end Antwan Odom to a $25 million deal this offseason, but he can't even get on to the field. In 12 games, Odom had 26 tackles and three sacks. Guess all of his production in Tennessee was the result of the opposition focusing on Albert Haynesworth and Kyle Vanden Bosch.

Pick change; previously George Selvie, DE

    39. Jacksonville Jaguars: Percy Harvin, WR, Florida

More help for David Garrard - this time in the wideout variety. Jacksonville's receiving corps is a running joke. I can't remember the last time the team had a deep threat. Matt "Coke Zero" Jones has emerged as a nice possession receiver, but Jacksonville needs someone to stretch the defense.

    40. Oakland Raiders: Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland

I'm cutting out the Al Davis joke I've used here in the past few updates. If you want more of Undead Al, however, you can check out the Emmitt on the Brink, where, as of this writing, Undead Al has unleashed Glandor, the ultimate football player. Glandor is 14'10" and 1,750 pounds, and runs an 0.8 40.

Speaking of 40s, you have to believe that Oakland's new receiver will be proficient in that category. Darrius Heyward-Bey will run a low 4.3, so he'll definitely be on Undead Al's radar.

    41. Green Bay Packers: Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State

With Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher turning 33 and 32 in June, respectively, it's time for the Packers to start looking for some young blood at offensive tackle. Besides, Russell Okung pretty much matches Ted Thompson's Best Player Available strategy.

Pick change; previously Connor Barwin, DE

    42. Buffalo Bills: Jonathan Luigs, C, Arkansas

The center position is a huge liability and needs to be upgraded if Buffalo wants to improve its interior blocking. Duke Preston didn't exactly make a great case for himself when he got into a fight at the end of the first half of the New England game, costing his team a field goal opportunity.

    43. San Francisco 49ers: Rashad Johnson, FS, Alabama

Mark Roman, whose contract expires after the 2009 season, has been awful this year at free safety. Perhaps more disappointing is that second-year Dashon Goldson hasn't been able to leapfrog him on the depth chart.

Pick change; previously B.J. Raji, NT

    44. Miami Dolphins: Phil Loadholt, OT, Oklahoma

It doesn't look like Vernon Carey will be back next year, so the Dolphins will need to find someone in the draft or free agency who can start at right tackle.

Pick change; previously Louis Delmas, OT

    45. New York Giants: Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers

Well, at least that stupid brown dog didn't laugh at Plaxico Burress when he shot himself in the foot... It's clear that the Giants really miss Burress' massive presence. At 6-4, 215, Kenny Britt is the closest thing to Burress available to the Giants at this juncture.

    46. Houston Texans: Matt Shaughnessy, DE, Wisconsin

Basically the Best Player Available formula for a team really hurting for defense.

Houston's pass rush is really pathetic. Take away Mario Williams' 12 sacks, and the team had only 13 on the year.

The Texans need to make things right after failing with Rosevelt Colvin this offseason.

    47. New England Patriots: Victor Harris, CB, Virginia Tech
The Patriots need help at corner, and Victor Harris is a steal if they can get him down here.

Pick change; previously Emanuel Cook, SS

    48. Denver Broncos: Evander Hood, DT, Missouri

The Broncos have been terrible against the run all year, ranking 30th against the rush and limiting opponents to five yards per carry. Lack of talent at defensive tackle is still a major problem.

    49. Chicago Bears: Fenuki Tupou, OT, Oregon

I know the Bears just drafted Chris Williams in the first round last year, but they need a bookend tackle. John Tait turns 34 soon. The fact that Chicago brought back Fred Miller shows how desperate they are for some talent at this position.

    50. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Sen'Derrick Marks, DT, Auburn

Tampa Bay's defense rotted away in the final four weeks of the season, and it looked like most of the players quit after Monte Kiffin mentally resigned. The Buccaneers need help at under tackle, among a few places on defense.

    51. Dallas Cowboys: Emanuel Cook, SS, South Carolina

The Cowboys have to be desperate for help at both safety positions at this point. Roy Williams (both) suck and Ken Hamlin was mainly responsible for those two long runs by the Baltimore running backs.

Pick change; previously Alphonso Smith, CB

    52. Arizona Cardinals: Larry English, DE/OLB, Northern Illinois

The Cardinals had trouble getting to the quarterback this season, as no one on the team had more than 31 sacks. Even worse, Karlos Dansby is a free agent and could be on his way out.

Pick change; previously Sam Young, OT

    53. New York Jets: Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina

With Brett Favre coming to town, Laveranues Coles and/or Jerricho Cotchery were expected to step up. That hasn't exactly happened, and it's become apparent that the Jets need a No. 1 receiver, especially with Coles, 31, set to hit free agency after the 2009 season.

Pick change; previously Juaquin Iglesias, WR

    54. Philadelphia Eagles: Sam Young, OT, Notre Dame

Andy Reid loves large offensive linemen. Whatever the reason may be - some argue that he's insecure about being the only massive man in the room - you have to believe that Reid will draft two mammoth linemen in the first three rounds.

Pick change; previously Herman Johnson, G

    55. Minnesota Vikings: Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State

I had a pretty large wager on the Eagles, so I have to say that it was a blast watching Tarvaris Jackson screw up in the playoffs. As I said in my recap, it's safe to say that I won't be getting any pro-Tarvaris e-mails this summer. I got about a couple dozen a day last year.

The Vikings need to start over at quarterback. Having a competition between Tarvaris and Gus Frerotte going into the 2009 season cannot be an option.

Pick change; previously Russell Okung, OT

    56. Atlanta Falcons: Chase Coffman, TE, Missouri

Could you imagine how lethal Atlanta's offense would be if the team somehow acquired a dynamic tight end? Matt Ryan would be unstoppable.

Pick change; previously Jared Cook, TE

    57. Miami Dolphins: Ron Brace, NT, Boston College

Jason Ferguson just turned 34, and his contract expires after the 2009 season. The Dolphins will need to acquire a new nose tackle in the near future.

    58. Baltimore Ravens: Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU

There's a chance Tyson Jackson gets picked in the first round, so getting him here would be a steal. He'd be a nice fit right next to Haloti Ngata on Baltimore's three-man front.

    59. New England Patriots: C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson

The Patriots need running back help; Laurence Maroney is always hurt, Kevin Faulk is nothing more than a fossil right now, while LaMont Jordan and Sammy Morris are pretty mediocre. C.J. Spiller, whose stock could explode at the Combine, could be a home-run threat at running back that New England really needs.

Pick change; previously Larry English, DE/OLB

    60. Carolina Panthers: Dorell Scott, DT, Clemson

It looks like the Panthers felt as though they missed the boat on the defensive tackle position, as they signed a bunch of scrubs immediately following the 2008 NFL Draft. They still need someone to fill Kris Jenkins' shoes, and they seriously have no depth at the position. Cornerback is also an option.

    61. Pittsburgh Steelers: Herman Johnson, G, LSU

The Steelers will be lucky if Herman Johnson makes it this far. They really need help up front.

Pick change; previously Jonathan Luigs, C

    62. Indianapolis Colts: Shonn Greene, RB, Iowa

Joseph Addai gets hurt every year, and even when he has been in the lineup, he hasn't been too effective. If Shonn Greene is available this late, the Colts may not be able to resist.

Pick change; previously Hakeem Nicks, WR

    63. New York Giants: Javon Ringer, RB, Michigan State

Giants fans have to be loving this Earth, Wind and Fire thing, but the reality is that Derrick Ward will likely sign with another team this offseason. Javon Ringer, a steal here, should be able to replace Ward as the team's pass-catching running back.

    64. Tennessee Titans: Tyrone McKenzie, OLB, South Florida

Keith Bulluck, who turns 32 next April, will hit free agency after the 2009 season. I don't see the Titans giving Bulluck a huge contract with his age being a factor.

    65. Detroit Lions: Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest

"We need a cornerback! Let's trade for one now! What? He doesn't fit our system? What system? We don't have a system!"

One can only imagine the discussions Matt Millen had in the war room...

Pick change; previously Keenan Lewis, CB

    66. St. Louis Rams: Devin Moore, RB, Wyoming

The Rams were absolutely horrible when Steven Jackson went down this year, so they need to make sure they have a valuable backup once that happens again. Devin Moore is a Felix Jones-, Chris Johnson-type runner who could run a 4.2 at the Combine.

Pick change; previously C.J. Spiller, RB

    67. Kansas City Chiefs: Darry Beckwith, ILB, LSU

Napoleon Harris was Kansas City's middle linebacker when the season began. That failed miserably, as Harris was cut a few weeks ago. Pat Thomas took Harris' spot, and based on Kansas City's defensive rankings - click here for accurate NFL Run, Pass Defensive Rankings - it hasn't exactly worked out too well.

    68. Seattle Seahawks: Louis Delmas, FS, Western Michigan

I've joked around about Brian Russell being banished from the city of Seattle long enough. The Seahawks really need an upgrade at free safety.

Pick change; previously DeAngelo Smith, CB

    69. Dallas Cowboys: Derek Pegues, FS, Mississippi State

As mentioned earlier, the Cowboys need help at both safety positions. Ken Hamlin is awful.

Pick change; previously Louis Murphy, WR

    70. Cincinnati Bengals: Antoine Caldwell, C, Alabama

A major reason why the Bengals haven't been able to run the ball effectively is the mess they have at the center position. They should be able to find an upgrade there in a center-heavy draft.

Pick change; previously Shonn Greene, RB

    71. Oakland Raiders: Domonique Johnson, CB, Jackson State

Easy pick for Al Davis. He needs cornerback depth in the wake of cutting DeAngelo Hall, and Domonique Johnson runs the fastest 40 (mid 4.3) out of all the top players remaining at his position. Hey, don't question the scouting methods of the Undead!

    72. Jacksonville Jaguars: Mike Mickens, CB, Cincinnati

Jacksonville has major issues at corner. The team brought in the overrated Drayton Florence and paid him a ton of money, which had many people scratching their head in confusion. Lo and behold, Florence has been benched; the Jaguars have been forced to move Brian Williams back from safety to corner. Consequently, they're ranked an embarrassing 31st against the pass.

Pick change; previously Mark Parson, CB

    73. Green Bay Packers: Auston English, DE, Oklahoma

One of the many problems the Packers had this season was their inability to put pressure on the quarterback. Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila was so ineffective early on that he was cut.

Pick change; previously Troy Kropog, OT

    74. San Francisco 49ers: Alex Boone, OT, Ohio State

I've had a quarterback in this spot for a while, but Shaun Hill is playing excellent football right now, owning a 5-3 record since the bye. The 49ers could be in playoff contention if they went with him all year. Let's not forget that Mike Martz called J.T. O'Sullivan the "best quarterback" he's ever coached.

The 49ers desperately need some help up front; their offensive line has surrendered 55 sacks this year.

    75. Buffalo Bills: Jared Cook, TE, South Carolina

The Bills have needed a quality pass-catching tight end for a very long time. Perhaps this is the year they finally address that need.

Pick change; previously Chase Coffman, TE

    76. New York Jets: Darius Butler, CB, Connecticut

Excluding Ryan Fitzpatrick, JaMarcus Russell, Seneca Wallace and Marc Bulger, every quarterback the Jets have faced this year has thrown for at least 243 yards. The Jets were so desperate for corner depth that they signed Ty Law.

    77. Houston Texans: Andy Levitre, G, Oregon State

Houston needs some help up front, particularly at right guard. Mike Brisiel shouldn't be starting at this level.

    78. San Diego Chargers: Fili Moala, DE/DT, USC

Many Chargers defenders have disappointed this year. Perhaps the greatest underacheiver, besides Shaun Phillips, is Igor Olshansky. San Diego needs an upgrade at defensive end.

    79. Denver Broncos: Dannell Ellerbe, ILB, Georgia

If the Broncos don't draft Brandon Spikes or James Laurinaitis in Round 1, chances are they'll have to target a Dannell Ellerbe or Darry Beckwith early on Day 2.

Pick change; previously Clay Matthews, OLB

    80. Washington Redskins: Anthony Parker, G, Tennessee

Washington's offensive line needs some young blood. Pete "I Think I'm a Running Back" Kendall and Randy Thomas will be 35 and 33, respectively, by the start of the 2009 NFL season.

Pick change; previously Andy Kemp, G

    81. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Juaquin Iglesias, WR, Oklahoma

Wide receiver will once again be a need next offseason. Dexter Jackson was acquired in the second round, but he's more of a kick returner than anything. Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard aren't going to be around much longer, while Antonio Bryant will undoubtedly revert to Sloth Mode once he signs a long-term deal with the team.

Pick change; previously Derrick Williams, WR

    82. Detroit Lions: Terrance Taylor, DT, Michigan

More defense for a team that desperately needs it. It's no coincidence that the Lions are giving up 5.4 yards per carry (good for dead last in the NFL) after trading away Shaun Rogers.

    83. Arizona Cardinals: Eric Wood, C, Louisville

Arizona's current center, Lyle Sendlein, is known for botching a snap or two each game. This just in - that's not good.

Pick change; previously Antoine Caldwell, C

    84. Green Bay Packers: Louis Murphy, WR, Florida

The Packers don't really need a receiver, but this is going with Ted Thompson's draft strategy. Louis Murphy is a high second-round prospect, who for some reason, fell in this mock. Hey, the man took Brian Brohm in the second round when he had Aaron Rodgers waiting in the wings.

Pick change; previously Kam Chancellor, S

    85. Chicago Bears: Trevor Canfield, G, Cincinnati

Lovie Smith is an ultra-conservative coach, and I truly believe that he thinks his team can win the Super Bowl by running the football behind a great offensive line and playing outstanding defense, despite the fact that he has Kyle Orton throwing to a bunch of bums. If I'm right, he'll make sure he solidifies his front before improving his aerial attack, though it wouldn't shock me if he goes wideout here to find a complement for Devin Hester.

    86. Philadelphia Eagles: Rashad Jennings, RB, Liberty

The Eagles probably have a better shot at converting fourth-and-11 than they do fourth-and-one. That's because Andy Reid is a moronic play-caller, and always decides to go with a run toward the right guard or right tackle with his small running backs. Or sometimes he mixes it up and calls for a Hail Mary. Big Red needs a big back. At 6-1, 232, Rashad Jennings qualifies.

    87. Minnesota Vikings: Jarron Gilbert, DT, San Jose State

Pat Williams won't be around forever. The Vikings need to secure a solid defensive tackle. Jarron Gilbert will play under tackle, which will move Kevin Williams over to the nose. Gilbert has terrorized quarterbacks this year. Through 11 games, Gilbert has 47 tackles, 21.5 TFL, nine sacks and three passes broken up.

    88. Miami Dolphins: Mohamed Massaquoi, WR, Georgia

Ted Ginn and Davone Bess both have their strengths, but neither wideout is a massive target. At 6-2, 205, Mohamed Massaquoi could be the solid split end Miami was looking for when it signed Ernest Wilford.

Pick change; previously Brandon Gibson, WR

    89. Baltimore Ravens: Troy Kropog, OT, Tulane

Injuries have exposed how thin the Ravens are up front. They'll need to address their depth issue in this draft.

If Baltimore doesn't sign a corner, it'll also have to address that position in the first three rounds. Chris McAlister, now 31, came off an injury-ridden season and just went back on IR. Meanwhile, it seems like retirement is knocking down Samari Rolle's door. Trading for Fabian Washington wasn't enough; the Ravens need a No. 1 corner for the future.

Pick change; previously Augustus Parrish, OT

    90. New England Patriots: Nic Harris, SS, Oklahoma

Nic Harris seems like the strong safety-linebacker tweener the Patriots love to have on their roster. With retirement knocking down Rodney Harrison's door, the Patriots would love to add someone like Harris to their roster.

Pick change; previously Derrick Williams, WR

    91. Atlanta Falcons: Michael Hamlin, SS, Clemson

Lawyer Milloy was beaten like a mule on Arizona's two long touchdown plays. Strong safety is in dire need of an upgrade.

    92. Pittsburgh Steelers: Augustus Parrish, OT, Kent State

Yup, you guessed it - more offensive line help for the Steelers.

Pick change; previously Derek Pegues, FS

    93. Indianapolis Colts: Rhett Bomar, QB, Sam Houston State

We saw the Patriots draft a quarterback in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft, and we could see something similar from the Colts here. In the wake of Peyton Manning's knee surgery and Tom Brady's ACL-MCL tears, I think Bill Polian will recognize that he needs to develop an insurance policy for Manning. Plus, I'm sure he doesn't want to watch Large and Larger compete in the preseason again.

    94. Carolina Panthers: Mark Parson, CB, Ohio

There's a good chance Richard Marshall and Ken Lucas could both be gone soon, as neither has played particularly well this season. Carolina needs an upgrade at corner.

Pick change; previously Darius Butler, CB

    95. New York Giants: Gerald McRath, OLB, Southern Miss

Gerald McRath is one of the best players available at this juncture, and the Giants could use some help at linebacker.

Pick change; previously Nic Harris, S

    96. Tennessee Titans: Derrick Williams, WR, Penn State

Yeah, I know... the Titans don't draft receivers. Hey, miracles can happen (especially after your team has five drops in one half of the first loss of the year.)

I like all three of those players. I'd be good with that.

    Interesting.

i dont see anyway possible that larinitus goes before malualuaga, butwho knows. There were a few others in there that seemed out of place, but overall not bad.

A lot better than the fox sports or whoever.

Oh- i dont think sea takes crabtree with the #4 pick. I dont know much about him, but unless he is in the mold of larry fitz, or calvin johnson- i dont see a wr going in the first until mid 20's
    The Plan at the moment:

Draft: Trade a 3rd and 6th this year to a team to move up and get a 2nd next year (this will happen).

    Players I want:
Jake Ferguson (Jake Butt) or Jelani Woods or Jeremy Ruckert or Cade Otten (owen daniels) at TE- All 4th rd or later.
Troy Anderson LB 3rd/4th rd (yay Timmy!)
Neil Farrell, JR DL- run stuffer- bye purcell

He's just as good of a prospect as those two were.

Crabtree is a stud, he's going to go Top 5.

Crabtree will be a top 5...easily a top 10. I believe he is the highest rated player in the class and Seattle desperately needs a WR. He is as good as it gets.

6-3, 215...ran a 4.5 coming out of high school, but he'll probably run a 4.4 at the combine.

Mays @ 12 would be a no brainer. After that it really depends on who we bring in at HC and more importantly DC

I'd love Mays. And I love the commentary about us having the worst defense of all time.

anyone miss the monster hit by mays in the rose bowl? mays is very physical. not so much a ball hawk but just a physical safety that could actually be playing linebacker if he wanted. i think this kid is extremely gifted.

I guess I'm just not enamored by the safeties that are there for a fear factor. Mays can hurt people...no doubt. But I guess I just tend to prefer the safety that can make something happen BEFORE the reception is made.
