Yeah, his dad was an uber-queer too.
Yeah, his dad was an uber-queer too.
You know that Maualuga is more likely to turn into Boz, right?
Laurinaitis might not be a world-class LB, but he should be fully functional and able to be a quality part of a defense. He has the attitude necessary. He's as far personality-wise from Boz as you can get and still be on this planet. Boz was a bully. Laurinaitis just wants to be a player.
What does Rey want?
If Maualuga goes to the wrong D he could faceplant...HARD. There ARE deficiencies in his game as well. I don't expect him to go to the wrong team. I also heard the injury excuse this year, but Maualuga, as ferocious as he can be, is gonna get injured from time to time.
*shrugs* Maualuga is no sure thing. Let's not go overboard on burying Laurinaitis. The term "under-rated" is gonna come up a lot in his career IMO - what he does well he'll do really well and consistently. Stuffing the run coming at him, rallying the troops, being a second coach on the field, putting in the extra time in the film room and the weight room to be the absolute best he can be.
Whether that's as good as it needs to be for him to be a star is debatable.
Whether he'll do the work is not.
And I try never to dog players with heart and good talent - especially after years of watching a defense with no heart.
Heart's still a measurable. Want-to is important. Laurinaitis has as much want-to as any person in this draft, and is humble enough to listen to the best teachers in the world and do exactly what they say.
If Laurinaitis gets with the right teacher, look the eff out. Just sayin'.

G, above all people here, i most likely respect your opinion the most, but the only thing Laurinitis is going to be good at when he gets to the pros is the only thing he's good at now... being the second person to the ball and recording an assist. Oh yeah, and the occasional sack when the O-line doesnt touch him.
SHORYUKEN!
if we stick with a 4-3 and dont go after a mlb in round 1 id be happy if we went after vilma, traded down and went after cushing rd1, chung rd2, greene rd 2.
dj/vilma/cushing as starters and winborn/woodyard and larsen could all rotate in to keep our linebackers fresh.
then chung/barret
and hillis/greene
go dt and de in rd 3 and rd 4.

I guess I just get confused by some stuff. Discounting players because someone else likes them better than your pet player is one. Maybe it's the talk radio era where one guy has to be stupid for the other guy to be right.
I was told there was no way Woodyard was worthy of a 2nd or 3rd rounder, nor was Forte, and CERTAINLY not Jordy Nelson. All the teams that added my Heart Players certainly seem to like them now. I'm sure there are teams now that would drop that 2rd rounder on Woodyard over the chump they did pick.
Laurinaitis is one of those guys. He just cares more about football than your average player. He cares more about being a great teammate, leader and person.
Are there more-talented linebackers in this draft? Yes.
Are there higher-upside backers? Probably.
Would I be unhappy with adding Laurinaitis to this team? Not at all.
Dream brought up Everette Brown. Really talented kid, semi-position switch in the pros, could be a top-15 pick and would have to butcher draft interviews and the combine both to fall out of the first IMO.
And who could totally and completely fail as a pro.
Maybe Laurinaitis is already maxed out and he'll just trip all over himself out there as a LB in the pros.
But he's a better backer than Larsen, and Larsen already proved he was the best MLB on this team and could play consistently for several teams in this league as a starter, IMO.
Maualuga could be Nate Webster. Brown could be Moss.
What is it people fear James Laurinaitis could be that makes him unworthy of a 1st round selection?
Would I select him at #12? No. Spikes or Curry should be there, and I like both better if we wanted a LB.
Would I add Laurinaitis to my team if his stock slips and we can catch him later?
Yep. Apparently that's silly, but there are a few players every year who convince me that their floor would still be worth adding to my team.
He's one of em.

I merely stated that I believe that Maualuga would make a good 3-4 linebacker as he fits the ferociousness of that type of defense. Spikes would be my first pick of the big 3 regardless. I'm sorry but I just don't think that any amount of heart and work ethic makes up for the fact that you're consistently the second man to the ball in college. Its not gonna get any easier in the pro's.

I appreciate your opinion, man.
But if I swapped Laurinaitis and Maualuga on their current teams, most people would be telling me about how much of a monster Laurinaitis is and how that idiot Maualuga can't cover or get to the QB and is always late to the hole or overpursues.
Because Maualuga is all those things right now.
Maybe Rey has more physical skills to overcome his own deficiencies.
Maybe Laurinaitis has more desire to.
Of course, there's another maybe: Maybe I'm wrong.
Wouldn't be the first time. But like I said, Laurinaitis is gonna need to hook up with the right team to become a stellar player. Otherwise he's a good solid player who will be running after TEs into the end zone and jumping on piles to increase his tackle assist numbers.
He would have looked atrocious in the Slowik D, for instance. He couldn't have saved us with ridiculous athleticism or something.
But i'm not looking for a one-man savior. I'm looking for a team, and James IMO could be a decent piece of that team.

Maualuga should be a great 3-4 backer. And Spikes is my choice for MLB as well.
But I think people overestimate both the scheme and the talent on OSU. We'll find out in a few years if I'm blowing smoke outta my ass about Laurinaitis.
I'll buy you a beer and admit I was wrong in 2011, deal?

When it comes to the NFL Draft and prospects, I have a pretty good feeling that I know what I'm talking about. Then again it's only my opinion but hey, people seem to enjoy them. It is why I'm asked to go on radio shows, get invites to Mobile and have been offered jobs regarding sports writing because of my takes on it. Sorry to burst your bubble, but my opinions in this area are highly respected and I know a lot of people who have either scouted for pro teams or who are currently involved with scouting sites and companies in one way or another who I talk to on a regular basis who have been more than willing to share information with me and even come onto other forums to back up the information they have given.
(Whether it was back in 2006 when an old friend of mine who used to scout for the Browns and Bills discussed that Denver indeed called San Francisco to talk about moving all the way up to their spot to select a quarterback or my guarantee weeks before the draft that if Clady was on board at #12, he'd be the selection for Denver. I've also hit several other picks as well and have a lengthy and quality track history in this regard. I don't toss shit on the wall just to hear it stick.)
In regards to the people I know and their opinions: A general consensus is that James L., is an overrated player. It is one that I agree with. I see where G is coming from, and he's making a lot of good arguments and points. A common saying I hear is the classic, "First-round heart, mid-round talent." -- There are a lot of aspects of James game that I do not believe translates well into the NFL. He's a likely first-round pick, but I do not believe he has played like a first-rounder. Especially this past season. Then again, that is just my own opinion. Don't get your panties in a bunch because he's the guy you're rubbing off and I'm not a fan of it.
And when you lose an argument, you resort to personal attacks. Might want to go back to WalterFootball.com and to start regurgitating talking points again. Because it's quite obvious that you're not interested or have the capability of discussing the NFL Draft and prospects at a highly intelligent level.why does he wear gay cowboy hats and eye glasses too?
Oh, and FWIW -- Spikes over both Rey or James. If we traded down and got James, whatever. At #12, big mistake. IMHO. At any case, you've just been placed on ignore -- so anything you do have to say won't be read. Your comment towards me placed you there. Congrats.
when your all the things your saying then you dont have to try an prove anything to anyone. so you have an inside with sports writers. so what? it doesnt make you a god of scouting talent. i never have really agreed with you dream about your first round draft picks over the last 4 years. we disagree every year but that's our opinions. grow up an stop being a child. if you dont like a player dont just hijack a thread and call him a loser. if your such a god at scouting talent at LEAST CONTRIBUTE TO WHY YOU THINK HE IS A LOSER!
me or anyone else didnt really need to know you wrote a blog in your high school news paper.
glad to be on your ignore list. your the first and only person in the world i share this with. history has been made....*click*

While i normally don't agree with two women bleeding in the same thread, i'm quoting your post so dream can read, although I don't think its going to have any effect. You're right. Saying someone is a loser doesn't prove any point other than that you dont have enough information to make a legitimate argument. If people are going to discuss players or anything for that matter, at least make a concerted effort to prove your point with evidence.
