Thread: My idea for the off-season

Default My idea for the off-season

If the reports are correct that McDaniels is the leader for the job, then let's assume he will get it for the time being. He will probably install a 3-4 defense when he comes here as well. So, I am going to base this mock on that presumption.

I think we need to cut Dre Bly (although trading him for whatever we can get might be a better option). The guy has done shitty this year, but most of all, he takes up a lot of cap space. With that cap space, I would like us to try and sign Terrell Suggs to be our 3-4 OLB. He would be a good start to our pass rush attack that we have lacked since I can't remember. We could also sign Brian Dawkins to give a veteran presence with what will be a young safety core.

As for the draft, I have been the biggest Taylor Mays fan. However, I realize that we have a lot more holes to fill on defense, and trading down might be the best option. Let's say one of the good OT drop, or Stafford or Bradford drops, and Detroit wants one. I think we should trade our pick for the #20 and #33 overall pick. With the #20, I would love to take Brandon Spikes and have him team up with DJ Williams to form our ILB core. With the #33 overall pick, we should draft Tyson Jackson to form our DE combo with Marcus Thomas. Then, with our second round pick, we draft Patrick Chung. Those two will form a good young, albeit raw, safety tandems in the league. With our third round pick, we can address our NT need, and I think Ron Brace can be our answer at NT. If need be, we could wait until next year when Terrence Cody comes out to get our franchise NT. Then to satisfy those who want a RB in this draft, I like Rashad Jennings or Jeremiah Johnson in the fourth. Neither are franchise RB, but they would both add to our staple of quality RB.

    What do you guys think?

I think that I would absolutely hate switching to a 3-4. Just hate it.

i like the draft part, not so sure about the 3-4. I dont think he makes the switch anyways. Our personel isnt that good even for a 4-3 let alone a switch.

I dont think det makes a trade like that. They need all the help they can get. I could see tennesee movie up for a Solid DT to replace haynesworth, but then who would want to move back that far.

Nice mock though, i like most of it nicely.
    The Plan at the moment:

Draft: Trade a 3rd and 6th this year to a team to move up and get a 2nd next year (this will happen).

    Players I want:
Jake Ferguson (Jake Butt) or Jelani Woods or Jeremy Ruckert or Cade Otten (owen daniels) at TE- All 4th rd or later.
Troy Anderson LB 3rd/4th rd (yay Timmy!)
Neil Farrell, JR DL- run stuffer- bye purcell

i'd love that scenario to happen. chung i think is the 2nd best safety in the draft. i love mays but i think mlb is much more important to the defense. so if we go safety in round one that leaves us with none of the top 3 mlbs or top 2 olbs to choose from, they will all be long gone.

i seriously could live with spikes, jackson and chung. however maybe we could deal a few picks to jump back up in the 2nd to nab greene too! that would be 4 impact players who will all start.

How do you invoke the Trade Down Fairy?

Honestly, I think this year it is very possible. Last year's didn't scream stud anywhere outside of the top 5. Hell, even Clady had plenty of detractors...right, wrong or indifferent. I think this year's class has that WOW factor which may blur people's vision. Mays and Maualuga are both exciting and their potential may make GMs salivate. BUY they also have hoels in their games. Then you have the QBs and the OTs...and only 2 WRs in this draft that are "sure things". There were none last year and some teams may still be craving that stud WR they didn't find in 2008.

With that said, we have a juicy pick. #12 in this draft can satisfy a lot of teams' needs. Luckily we need a lot of players and can afford to trade back. One example could be Philly. They have Carolina's #1 and the 2 picks project to be #22 and #28. They may need a QB of the future as Kolb has been less than impressive OR Mays may fill a need if Dawkins moves along. I'd gladly take #22 and #28 cuz I think we can get a stud LB and DL or Safety w/ those 2 picks, althewhile not sacrificing rounds 2-7 or the 2010 draft.

Now I know the Detroit scenario seems to good to be true, but they just happen to be a team w/ 2 #1s this year. I guarantee you can go on any team in the league's message board and it's posters will have a "trade for Detroit's #20 and #33" scenario. It's the nature of the beast. Regardless we still have the #12 and a bunch of holes to fill. The Detroit scenario is probably too perfect to happen, but we CAN land a team's mid/late #1 and #2 picks and then parlay some things to move back up into late rd 1 or early rd 2. Will we? I dunno. But we have the currency to get something done.

    OK. I'm done now.

Huh? I think its more wishful thinking on your part than anything. Not only that, but Im not sure is best for us to trade down.

How is needing players wishful thinking? I WISH we didn't need shit. Unfortunately we have a GIANT question mark at 10 of the 11 defensive positions and at RB.

I think I'd be happier drafting Spikes and trying to sign Suggs and a Chris Canty/Rocky Bernard type for the DE. Maybe even a Jermaine Phillips or retread Dawkins for the safety tandem. Switching to a 3-4 can be done without having to completely overhaul the personnel, but even if it did...we can still focus the draft on that side of the ball.

I dont think anyone can realistically expect a new HC and GM to come in and immediately make this team a SB contender, so a year or two of getting the personnel here to make the switch is a distinct possibility.

The other thing to look at is the DE's coming out of college. More and more of them are being labeled as 3-4 OLB's every year. Seems like an easier path to follow to find a pass rush...unless you're Jim Johnson and you can turn ANYONE into a sack specialist

You like Chung better than Moore?

I think Moore is much better than Chung, but I would take any of those three safeties any day over Manuel.

also keep in mind we wont have the master of trading (shannahan) anymore, so our normal wheeling and dealing might not happen like we are used too.
