Default Jason Campbell: Trade came amid haze

Oakland Raiders quarterback Jason Campbell was recovering from surgery to his collarbone early this week as the wheels began to turn on the Carson Palmer trade, a deal that installed Campbell's possible replacement only six games into the second season of what he had considered a "fresh start" to his career.

Campbell, speaking to Bay Area radio station 95.7 FM The Game on Friday, said he was kept out of the loop as the trade was conceived and proposed and didn't discuss it with Raiders coach Hue Jackson before it was completed Tuesday.

"On Sunday night I had some pain pills for my shoulder, so I was pretty much sleeping all night Sunday," Campbell said. "And then Monday I had my surgery, so I was pretty much out of it then."

Default Campbell must plan for post-Raiders future

On Friday, injured Oakland quarterback Jason Campbell discussed with a Bay Area radio station the surprising turn of events that have put his future with the Raiders in flux.

Campbell stayed on his usual classy course, although he did admit he's stunned by what's happened. Campbell is the NFL’s current poster boy for how brutal and unforgiving the league can be as a business.

Campbell, 29, was enjoying success in his second season as the Raiders’ quarterback. The free-agent-to-be was likely on his way to earning a contract extension. Then he broke his collarbone last Sunday, and everything changed.

Keep it up Raiders. Maybe I was wrong about what would happen to this franchise post-Al Davis. They keep picking up the league's garbage and claiming excellence.

At this point, I'm not sure Palmer is an upgrade. Campbell makes a lot of plays with his legs buying time for all of those deep routes to develop that Oakland loves. Palmer is as mobile as Orton. When we play Oakland next, I'd blitz the shit out of that dude.

Palmer is overrated (and has been for the past 5 years). The Bengals absolutely RAPED the Raiders on this one. Even Al Davis wouldn't have made that trade.

Palmer would have been an upgrade four or five years ago, but not now...especially since he hasn't played or practiced with a team since last year.
