Default Browns will let Hillis Test the Market in 2012

Apparently, Hillis' agent was asking for a lot but came down recently. Wonder if the Broncos would be interested in signing Hillis next summer?

    Per Rotoworld:

Browns president Mike Holmgren indicated Thursday that Peyton Hillis will be allowed to reach free agency in 2012.
Holmgren ready to let the market set the price for their bell-cow running back. Hillis' original asking price was reportedly "extremely high." His agent has since come down from that offer, but the latest proposal "wasn't anywhere near what the Browns were willing to pay." At this point, Hillis appears more likely than not to hit the open market this winter.

The Browns sure seem eager to keep him. Surely two franchises couldn't be wrong about him!

BTB will have a field day with this....

Peyton's biggest problem is he cant stay healthy. No team is willing to pay out the ass for a guy who cant stay on the field. Not the best of moves on Hillis's part.

Hillis just like Jonathan Stewart must be in a system that shares the workload or he won't last 4 more years in the league with his running style.

Hey, don't take my word for it, I'm not one of the two teams in three years that is going to let him go for nothing.

I like(d) Hillis as much as the next guy, but he is and always has been overrated.

As much as I love Hillis, I believe his Broncos ship has sailed.

    from article:

Hillis is in the final year of his rookie contract, which will pay him $600,000 this season. Hillis can be a free agent in March, and Holmgren said the Browns will pursue the running back even if he tests the open market.

"Are we going to be a player in there (free agency) to try and keep him here?" Holmgren said. "Absolutely. I told him that yesterday."

He needs to be on a team where he gets 10-12 touches a game. Any more and his career is doomed.

He also said, in that same presser, that he had zero interest in trading Hillis:

“There was no way I’m trading Peyton Hillis,” he said. “There was no way that was going to happen. Why would I trade one of our best players? I wouldn’t do it.”

When you consider that two of the three injuries he had were hamstring tears, I'm not sure this statement holds water. May you can argue the broken ribs he played with the end of last season was from over use, or an unlucky hit. But, when you are talking a circus catch that gets your leg stuck in the turf and bent over by two defenders, resulting in a torn hamstring, and a pulled hamstring this season, it's hard to blame work load on him.

If there was a workload last year, it was not the traditional running back touches, but the fact that he was also their second leading receiver (with the TE being #1 I believe), because of how bad they have been at QB and WR.
