see.. this is the really REALLY irritating part with posts like this. Its this bullshit black-or-white crap.
It has NOTHING to do with thinking Hillis is "great." We don't think he's a HoFer, we don't think he's the best in the NFL, and we don't think he should be enshrined in the Ring of Fame. Thats just something the Hillis bashers and McD defenders say to try and minimize what we REALLY DO like about Hillis...... and thats the fact the he's STILL the best RB on our football team, he absolutely would have made our running game better, and he's a damn good football player that brings a "toughness" to this team that we are SERIOUSLY lacking.
It sucks when you watch MnF (and now SnF) and see the QB our brilliant coach traded away purely because he wanted Cassel. It SUCKS to watch Hillis BASH through defenders, or make one handed catches out of the backfield and roll over CBs... knowing that he was traded purely because McD either wasn't smart enough to use him, or (as I believe) wanted to get rid of the kid that the media/fans kept asking about. It's a CONSTANT reminder that not only are we a BAD football team, but McDoosh PUT US THERE and assured we stay there for a long time.
So **** this "they think he's great" bull. We just know that he would have made this team BETTER. He, combined right along with the rest of the talent that was exorcized from this franchise, made this team MUCH better than it is today. As a fan of this team, and as a fan of Hillis' playing ability, playing STYLE, and personality.... I MISS that. I MISS seeing that in the Blue and Orange because I LOVED it when it was here.
The quicker you realize that not everyone likes him because he's white (and yes, you do believe this), and don't think he's the greatest RB in the NFL (yet we STILL like him)... and the faster you realize that Hillis starting/playing is BETTER than Quinn sitting, then the faster you'll "GET" why the fans of this team miss him.

Depends.
Is it just that back? In Cleveland's case this year despite his injuries he is still the leading rusher on his team and that isnt saying much. So is it a larger problem than just Hillis at this point? Could be.
What i dont get is if you believe that Hillis is such a turd why go to great lengths to try and prove it? People are going to believe what they want to believe. You've already admitted that the trade was a bad one from McD which is one of the things people had a problem with in the first place. If you believe that Hillis is an average back why bother trying to convince people otherwise?
At the end of the day RB is the most easily replaceable position in the NFL and the players have the shortest shelf life (especially brusing RBs like Hillis). I would bet alot of money he will never have a season that tops last year.
While I still believe that is a large reason for his popularity, I have stated repeatedly that many Broncos fans are so obsessed with him because he is a martyr of the McD era. Had Shanny made that trade, I would bet anything you want that he doesn't get half the flak McD got for it.The quicker you realize that not everyone likes him because he's white (and yes, you do believe this), and don't think he's the greatest RB in the NFL (yet we STILL like him)... and the faster you realize that Hillis starting/playing is BETTER than Quinn sitting, then the faster you'll "GET" why the fans of this team miss him.
Yes, your biggest problem with him (other than him being white) is that people bash McD over it. As if defending this move will EVER, in any small amount of way, justify McD's insistence of removing the best players from this team. Shanahan DIDN'T make the trade. He wouldn't have made that trade. McD made that trade while taking this team to the lowest it has EVER been.
Its making trades like this one, that allowed this team to FALL TO THE BOTTOM of the NFL. A wall, even a small wall, can only take so many stones from its foundation before it comes CRUMBLING down, and McD took a sledgehammer to the base. Hillis was just one of the stones, that when combined with the other stones, made a VERY solid foundation to build upon.
But you keep right on defending that move, because its obvious we are Soo much better for it. It was a bad trade, it was a bad move, and Hillis made THIS team better (just as he's made Cleveland better). You can try and defend McDoosh all you want. Doesn't change that fact.

At the end of the day it really doesnt even matter if Hillis is a great back or not. He was a 7th round draft choice who many liked for his persona, and liked because of the way he plays foozeball. But even if flames out its still not going to shed a good light on McDaniels as a coach no matter how hard BTB tries.
I truly believe that even if everyone who likes Hillis admitted that he isnt all that BTB would still not admit that McD was atrocious and absolutely destroyed this franchise from head to toe. The fact that the St. Louis offense has not only become worse but that Bradford as a QB has played worse only proves that point even more.
In the end, Hillis was a fan favorite, McD was not.
