Good coordination plus masterful Command and Control by the RAF. They were fighting over home turf, so many RAF guys who were shot down were able to bail out and be back in action within days. Every Luftwaffe guy shot down was either dead or a POW. ME 109's were tied to escorting duty, which often ceded initiative - plus, agility in WW2 wasn't quite the thing it was in WW1. The way to beat a more agile airplane (which we learned against the Japanese, from the AVG guys of the Flying Tigers who learned it the hard way) was get height, come in fast, fly right through the enemy formation guns blazing, and keep going. Do NOT get in a dogfight with, say a Zero or an Oscar.
