- John Elway“When we do find that guy, we’ve got to have the continuity on the offensive side to where we can train him and develop him and get him there. This is our fourth offense in probably three or four years. Quarterbacks need to be developed. You don’t find one ready-made. We got to have a solid system in place for when we do go after whatever guy it may be, a young guy or a trade or whatnot.”
Peterson is going to be a free agent. He just got demoted to back up status by Del Rio because of an argument in a team meeting. He would be an upgrade over what we got by far and should come at a decent price. I could go for us signing him. He will deffinitely not be a Jaguar next year.
Honestly if Sheff goes I could see Nate Jackson sliding into his spot. Jackson has done a very good job as a #3 WR. So maybe we should let Sheff test the market and if he isnt getting high dollar then we can match what ever offer he gets. There's always LJ Smith too.
all good points dog. in fact i wouldnt mind a laurainitis or maluaga for the draft especially if we can target a dt during the offseason via free agent. i just dont think this is a position to fool around with anymore though. tinkering with fb's and olb i can see but not dt's. we need serious pressure up front. our defense would look 110% better with a guy like haynesworth.
but, again i think people are not realizing that we are actually going to be fine with the cap. cutler isnt going to get a new contract until 2010.
as far as slowik goes. maybe he should go back to coaching our secondary. i just think it's the best thing for the organization to bring in a new dc.

don't get me wrong, i completely agree with you in theory-- i've been screaming for a strong D-line since the minute we let berry go. . . i'm a huge fan of defensive football-- a tough defense and running game is a good formula for playoff success, and the model i'd love to see us follow. . . watching our alleged defense makes me sick! however, i'm not under any illusion that shenanigans gives a crap what i think. . .
as for the cap. . . we are in good shape for the first time in a while, and i'm sure that's very intentional. . . i think bowlen absolutely has the possibility of a looming labor war in mind, and i believe he's cutting costs with the intention of being one of the standard-bearers for the "owners need to make more money" cause, which he can't do if he's throwing dollars around makin' it rain in free agency like jerry jones or dan snyder. . . i also think we pulled in the reigns with the knowledge in mind that DJ was a free agent after this year and the '06 draft class is heading towards free agency. . .
you're right that Cuts won't have to be extended for a few more years, but they have to make sure there's plenty of cash in the kitty to get it done-- especially if he comes out next year and throws 30+ TDs and cuts down his turnovers. . . i'm no capologist, but it's awfully hard for me to believe that we can sign haynseworth to a mega-deal, give marshall a huge extension, give chef, kupes and doom all significant extensions, and still have cap room left to give jay a blockbuster deal a year or so later-- i just don't think it's possible. . . and with that in mind, i have a really hard time thinking shenanigans is going to let half of the core of his young offense walk in FA over the next year or so. . . remember, this is the offensive mastermind, and he cut pryce and let berry and hayward walk over money-- is he now ready to spend 60-70 mil on big albert?
that's the kind of philosophy shift you rarely see in the NFL-- people want to work with what they know, what's comfortable and reliable to them. . . it's why you never saw indy trade reggie wayne for a top defensive star even when they were so one-dimensional. . . it's why the ravens are extremely unlikely to let lewis and suggs walk this year and go spend that money on a top receiver. . . most teams want to maintain their strengths and try to patch their wekanesses, not trade one for the other. . .
so, as much as a lot of us fans would love to see denver try to build a defensive powerhouse, or at least change the defense in a big way with that one superstar signing, i myself don't think it's going to happen. . . and for that matter, i don't know that i even trust shanahan to build or run a defensive team. . . it's not what we've had success doing in the past-- we had our best teams when we were an elite offense with a competent D, and IMO we're much, much closer to getting to that point again than we are to building a D that can win games on its own. . . that's why i'd almost rather see us spend the money retaining most of our offensive weapons-- at least i KNOW shanahan and co. know how to be effective using them! they'd probably try to bring a bunch of zone blitzes and drop haynseworth into coverage for the element of surprise, or something like that (i'm joking. . . kind of). . .
anyways, JMO-- we're just fans, it's not like we have the answers. . . . just when i think i have shenanigans figured out, he'll go and do something totally unexpected. . .

well dog, alot has changed since i made this thread.
#1 we got a new head coach
#2 we got a new dc (nolan) that is going to run a 3-4
#3 we have a little more cap room then first though. closer to 33 mill and counting.
#4 nt's are rare this offseason so why not get one of the best in the game? haynesworth can play nt and dt.
Broncos named Mike Nolan defensive coordinator and signed him to a two-year contract.
Nolan coached in Denver from 1987-92 under Dan Reeves. He is likely to run a 3-4, which will give McDaniels the flexible game-planning option he desires. Nolan's defense in San Francisco never improved much with weak pass rushers, but he had a solid run as Baltimore's coordinator. Look for Elvis Dumervil to move to OLB and Denver to pursue NT Albert Haynesworth this offseason.
