    Default Help my laptop died

Not sure if this is a good place to put this but looking for info or help or something.

2 nights ago all the sudden the screen on the laptop just went blank. The lights on the key board were still on but the screen was gone and would not come back. So I powered off manually and restarted. The lights on the key board went on and off a few times then it started and worked fine.

Last night same thing only this time the lights on the keyboard go on and off every few seconds and the screen never turns of.

    Ideas? Suggestions?

What really sucks is that it is the ex's laptop. You know this wont go over well

You didn't spill beer on it, did you?

I think so but the lights on the keyboard go on like normal for 3-10 seconds then go off like it shuts down. Then back on for awhile then back off.

Do you have another monitor you can hook up to see if it is doing anything different.

Bottom line, anything motherboard related on the sum bish besides ram means you are most likely screwed.
Thanks MO for the wicked Sig.

I'll see if I can hook it up to the flat screen tv tonight.

The next question is do I give it back to the ex and say "this POS is worthless junk" or "Thanks for letting me use it what a wonderful machine it is"

    no and yes

What really is going to suck is I bet she had nothing backed up anywhere. All her Itune, Ipod, Iphone shit was on there.

It may have just gotten bitter

Maybe I should hide my big screen before I hand over the puter

Looks like you're buying a new laptop instead of a washer.

The hard drive is probably still good. They make external USB had kits that you can install that hard drive to. Data isnt necesarrily lost yet... Keep that in mind.

You may want to try opening it up and cleaning out any dust that may be built up in there. Dust can cause a lot of problems. I've had to do that before and afterwards everything was fine.

Is the laptop on a docking station? The one I have at work is on a docking station and if the battery is in while it is docked it screws up regularly. I pulled the battery from mine and it works fine.
    Just a suggestion...

Sorry I am a bit late on this. First of all, what is the make and model of the laptop? Second, what happened when you hooked it up to your TV? Third, are there any flashing patterns on the lights, or any beeping noises (these can be important to help figure out what the problem with the computer is)? Finally, is there any warranty left on this laptop?

As far as things on the hard drive, I am sure that her data is fine. It could be that the video card is shot, or that the backlight on the lcd is dead. If it is out of warranty, there could be up to a $1000 charge to have it repaired depending on the manufacturer. Your ex should understand, and tell her that a professional (me) has informed you that there will probably be no data lost from her hard drive. If it comes down that you need a new laptop, pick up one of these:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817155704

It will let you pull the laptop's hard drive out, and make it a usb drive so you should be able to pull the data off of it. But, you need to make sure its either sata or ide. If its an sata drive, then you will need this one:

Anyway, I know I haven't been on much, but feel free to pm me or e-mail me any questions you have.

I've heard from others that excessive pornography viewing causes screens to go 'black' and to stop functioning...

Don't know if it's true or not...my screen is working fine.
