Default Best Case Scenario unfolding for Denver draft

Reading Gil Brandt's nfl.com chat today, Gil sees Cam Newton and Blaine Gabbert in a dead heat for top QB of the draft and thinks that Carolina should use their pick on a QB. Whichever one they take creates a HUGE demand for the other at the top of the draft. IF they stay close, and IF they work out well, I think there is a very good chance that the Panthers take one of them first overall and Denver gets a slew of offers for the second pick of the draft. That would still leave all the top defensive prospects on the board as well.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if the panthers went with a qb when it's all said and done. Thier owner may flat out refuse to pay that much money to any other position.

Same could be said for 2nd pick. Especially when nobody out there is really a stud difference maker.
I seem to remember a draft where a team didn't get their pick in in time and was 'skipped' until they were ready. Hmmmmm........

Even better than that, we are back to talking contract with Champ. Keeping him around will likely minimize the chance of taking Peterson at #2 and we can stay focused on D-LINE!!!

OR, they want CB to be around to help break him in and then they grab DL in rd2.

The talk locally here is that the Broncos should only consider Peterson, if they do not resign Champ. The argument is that as good as Champ was this past year, what he accomplished, was not enough to win them games, as the DL was terrible.

I think they are dead on. As you worded, it should only be a "consideration" if Champ isn't signed. Not that its an absolute need or must. DL can be addressed later in the draft. We have to get the best player with that #2 pick.

The Super Bowl was a PERFECT example of how you need both (a good DL and good backfield) on a good defense. One side you had a very good pass rush that was eaten alive because the QB could get the ball uncovered WRs.

On the other side, you had a team that has VERY good corners and a DL that was ok, but not great. They relied on their Blitzes to get pressure (a lot of the time from their corners), but were able to hold the Pitts passing game to manageable levels.

As far as drafting the best player available with the #2 pick - unless the Broncos have changed their thinking, Xanders stated that the Broncos #2 pick will be the best available player for their needs.

GB had better QB/WR's than Pitt did. Raper under/overthrew all game long. And Pitt hasn't had a good secondary for awhile now, as they've always relied on their rush. Losing what some call their mvp of their line didn't help. GB was able to run the ball because of his absence. Rogers was hit/pressured, but still had time to get the ball to open receivers.
To use only the SB game as a 'how to build a D' is silly. Especially when both use a completely different scheme than denver evidently will. Both teams ALSO have linebackers far superior to denver's and yet you don't mention them.
Even McD knew he had to improve at LB, and had Oak not grew some brain cells, had his eyes on McClain. If Miller is head/shoulders better that the current bunch, and the rest of the draftees, what would keep the FO from grabbing him 1st, then the 'uber-deep' DL? Put avg lb's on GB/PITT; are they still in the SB?

I think we're fine regardless of what the Panthers and Champ Bailey do.

...and I'm warming up to the idea of drafting Peterson at 2 and getting some big uglies in the second.

We just need to hit on some picks this year.

Right. I feel that goes without saying. I mean the Colts may want to draft teh best available player, but they aren't going to use it on a QB. We aren't going to use it on a LT or a QB.

An amazing concept that few grasp. As they have invested themselve in a certain player or stance on how things should be run.

They will disappointed ome way or the other.

I'd be surprised if CAR goes QB @ 1. They used a 2nd last year, have two young guys that still have some upside. And if they want another QB they'll still be able to get one of the top 4-5 guys with their 2nd pick, and all those guys are rated similarly, even if one or two are emerging a bit in shorts.

They'd be better of going AJ Green imo if they want to help their offence, and give their young QBs another year to develop.

And with Rivera involved now, I think they'll want to rebuild the defense.

Imo best case scenerio for us is they take Fairly so we don't have to make the risk/reward calculation.

Newton is getting a lot of buzz as a top 3 pick. Mike Mayock is huge on Blaine Gabbert (me too!). I think there is every chance those two go with the first two picks of the draft. Fairley is troublesome, Bowers is a one year wonder with a bad knee, Peterson will end up at safety. Trading down would be the thing to do for Denver.

It shouldn't matter but Newton will also bring more revenue to Carolina because some Auburn fans will probably follow him there. Auburn, AL is near the Georgia border and the trip from there to Charlotte is not as far as some might think. It's the same reason I really thought J-ville couldn't resist taking Tebow.

If the Panthers *do* take a QB, we should take the best available player regardless of position because we will be paying them a big wad of money and expecting them to be here for the next 7-10 years so I would expect them to take the best guy on their board.

I'd prefer it be somebody on defense but you have to take the best guy when you pick that high.

The other thing you do is look to trade down, particularly if somebody has the hots for Gabbert and the Broncos don't see much separation between the top 2-3 d-linemen. A move down to 4-5 and pick up an extra #1 in the process would be ideal.
I miss the old Mile High Stadium.
