Good move by Carroll. I hate the Raiturds, but for some reason really like Cable.

He seems like an inherently likable guy. Plus he punches his coaches. For some reason, I find that endearing.

Default Ten more highlights from the epic Al Davis press conference

Here’s a sample, with a big assist to Jerry McDonald at the Oakland Tribune and David White of the San Francisco Chronicle:

    1. Davis on beating Lane Kiffin in arbitration: “I beat him because he lied. He’s a liar.” (Davis called him “Lance” Kiffin at one point. He also called Cam Newton “Kim” Newton.)

    2. Davis said Cable would have been fired after the season even if the team made he playoffs because of his off-field problems. The Raiders owner crushed Cable for saying “We’re not losers anymore.” It was pretty obvious Davis saw Jackson as a potential head coach the moment they hired him.

    3. A reporter asked Davis about the efficacy of the team’s background checks considering Kiffin and Cable’s history: “We’re very bad at it,” Davis said. Awesome.

    4. In an upset, the line of the day went to Jackson: “What Tom Cable is as a football coach is an exceptional line coach.” (Ouch.)

Al Davis takes aim at Tom Cable

As detailed by the San Francisco Chronicle (we’ve also got a snippet of the performance, thanks to our friends at NBCSports.com), Davis turned to the topic of Cable as the press conference seemed to be winding down. Davis cited the Randy Hansen incident, explaining that during an August 2009 meeting with Cable and other coaches, “Randy’s jaw was broken, to this day nobody is sure how it was broken.”

Davis also said that “[w]e had a spouse accuse the head coach of personal relations that were not good,” that the Raiders faced a lawsuit from a woman who claimed that Cable mistreated her, that Cable was “flying in friends so they could be with them the night before the game.” (The over/under on comments containing the phrase “lay some cable” or a variation thereof is 23.5.)

“I just wasn’t going to take it anymore,” Davis said regarding the decision not to pick up an option in Cable’s contract.

Davis also confirmed that he withheld $120,000 in pay from Cable, who reportedly has filed a grievance with the league office to force the payment of the money.

he's also been accused of beating his GF, so possibly not such a great guy. . .
“When we do find that guy, we’ve got to have the continuity on the offensive side to where we can train him and develop him and get him there. This is our fourth offense in probably three or four years. Quarterbacks need to be developed. You don’t find one ready-made. We got to have a solid system in place for when we do go after whatever guy it may be, a young guy or a trade or whatnot.”
