    Interesting, I always thought the Corvette was named after the original corvettes, the smallest and fastest of all the three-masted square-rigged sailing ships in our original US Continental Navy.

    The "light fast type of World War II warship" was named after these sailing ships of the 16th century, as were many other "modern" warships.

    For example, the name Enterprise dates back to pre-Revolutionary war, originally French, then British, then the first US Enterprise was the captured HMS George.

    Then a few years later a brand new privateer was purchased and named the Enterprise.

    Then in 1799 the war schooner USS Enterprise was commisioned which was instrumental in the capture of Tripoli, 01 August 1801, a day famous in the history of the USMC.

    So on and so forth to today's USS Enterprise CVN-65, the world's first nuclear powered aircraft carrier.

    Following from the story:

    The legend of Corvette clearly developed from the work Harley Earl did during World War Two, and thus why he code named this sports car after the German brand “OPEL” in its early concept phase or genesis years (see all the convincing examples below). It’s important to note how the Opel name often receives a sentence or two in numerous books written on Corvette, but no author, journalist or auto historian has ever done a comprehensive job on where and why the name was used in the first place. Again, this all has to do with Harley Earl’s secretive nature and how he never put his mouth all over his creations. But thankfully, he left an incredible paper trail that is now finally coming forward, and once perused, straightforwardly debunks many of the detractor's claims on how and why the Corvette was created in the beginning.

    The resurfacing of Chrysler's hemi engine marked a new era in NASCAR racing.
    In the Daytona 500 of that year, Paul Goldsmith was the pole-sitter in his
    Dodge. However, the race finished with Plymouth going 1-2-3, led by Richard
    Petty.

    Who was the famous driver who finished 4th, and what make of car did he drive?

    The Corvette was created in "the beginning" to compete with European cars. This dream of the creator finally came to fruition after 50 years. Corvette has dominated the 24 Hours of LeMans in its class for the past 5 years straight.

    The first signed special edition in Corvette’s 54-year history, the Corvette Z06 ‘Ron Fellows edition’ marks the contribution of the Canadian racer to the success of the Corvette racing programme. Only 399 are planned for production, with 33 destined for Europe. All are distinguished by unique Arctic White paint accented with a racing-style fender stripe and Ron Fellows’ autograph, along with a full-width racing-type rear spoiler and polished 10-spoke aluminium wheels.

    The ‘Ron Fellows edition’ is based on the Corvette Z06. At the heart of the Z06 is the LS7 V8 engine, achieving 377kW (512 hp) at 6300 rpm, matched to a rear-mounted 6-speed transaxle to provide optimum weight distribution. In first gear the Z06 delivers a 0-100 km/h performance of 3.9 seconds and it has a top speed of 320 km/h.

    The special-edition is distinguished by unique interior and exterior appointments. The Corvette Z06 is only available in Arctic White that is accented with a racing-style fender stripe and Ron Fellow’s autograph. The front fender graphics are reminiscent of the identifying graphics of the Corvette GT1 race car. They feature double Monterey Red Metallic stripes with Machine Silver borders and Fellows’ autograph in a contrasting Victory Red shade. In recognition of Fellows’ Canadian heritage, a red maple leaf logo motif is incorporated with the graphics. Other exterior cues include a full-width racing spoiler and a unique windshield banner.

    Special interior equipment includes red seats, console, door trims and instrument panel. The red leather armrest, featuring the Corvette crossed flags logo is signed and numbered inside by hand. A final refinement is a carbon-fibre “tech” pattern interior trim plate.

    However, I was actually looking for:

    WHAT WAS THE FIRST ZO6 CORVETTE ?
