I have noticed that a great many of pieces of music that strike a chord near my soul are about restlessness or wandering and being a stranger. Take for example the lyric piece by Grieg called Heimwarts (trans: Homewards). Something about it, even though most such pieces are melancholic or minor-key'ed, and this has a major-minor-major template, makes it fall square in this basket of wander-lust music.
(that's me and yeah I suck but whatevs)
Another one that gets me--the one that got me to pick up the piano--is Schubert's Wanderer Fantasie. I like this youtube link because the cover art that Deutsche Gram used on Pollini's record (*the* best recording extant, not even close) is David Friedrich's 'The Wanderer'...something about this ethos resonates with me. This time I won't suggest my version even though it's a solid effort at the 10 month point.
I want to wander! I have the wanderlust!
