Dread brought up Dead Can Dance and it got me thinking. Most who are familiar with DCD think about them as essentially a 'world music' or 'ancient music' band. Before all that, they were on their way to becoming a cross between The Cure and U2...something like that. Goth mysticism with danceable beats. I sometimes wonder what that band would have become, if they stayed in the goth rock lane. The world would never get Host of Seraphim and Saltarello...but would they get something else of equal beauty?

I bet Dread would like this first cut in particular.

Hey this is my youtube playlist, it's got all my favorite songs ever, including all the classical crap, country, DMB, but not any or much metal. Anyways, it's really good and maybe you bookmark it so that youtube's algorithm shares great music with all the young people.

Stare at your feet and then annihilate several existences type music...#58 on my list (not ranked)

Yo La Tengo always at their best with highest energy stuff. Tom Courtenay is another great song like that.

This is number (? no idea).

Chaz, remember when I said that Neil Gaiman was somehow unserious? Like Proust vs. McCarthy?

That same thought arose when I heard this one. None of you will actually like this I bet, but I do. Anyways, this second recording is too lighthearted. Even though it's a lighthearted piece. It needs some foundation of seriousness to really bring out the underlying melancholy that limns the joy.

@30:08 (you don't need to listen long, maybe a minute or so)

This is Gilels. And this interpretation is fine--most say the best. In general Gilels is too playful for me. He's too much Proust, not enough McCarthy. Doesn't acknowledge mortality sufficiently to buttress his thoughts as worthwhile art. But this version is solid compared to this next one.

Which is actually excellent. But something about the lightheartedness puts me off. It's not actually a lighthearted piece! It's happy, but only because of the loneliness that the artist must imply.

eh. Could just be that I see Chaimovich's playful mien.

Well, these are my thoughts, maybe they are interesting to you.

    omg

it's solely his facial expressions that bother me.

this raises other questions, but for now, let's just move on

wow what a trip, I was drunk and getting into the weeds on a Grieg lyric piece. Typical.

Anyhoo, this is what I'm listening to.

Mr. Lydon is an interesting chap! I had a phase when I liked all PiL's unlistenable stuff. What was wrong with me?

Wait maybe I was ok then but wrong now. Hm.
