Just got back to our hotel from the Murder By Death concert at the Stanley.
I should set this up a bit. The Stanley Hotel is most famous for being the inspiration for the book The Shining. Stephen King was staying here when he got the idea for the novel. Even though the Kubrick film was not filmed here the Hotel is still pseudonymous with it.
The idea behind the concert was for everyone to dress up in their best 20's era garb and recreate the famous photograph that was seen in the final scene of the great Kubrick film. Well, some of you may know that I have posted the fact that I do not even own a tie. Well, not only do I now own a tie I in fact have learned to tie a bow tie. My wife and I made a trip to ARC thrift store in which I found some nice slacks then we proceeded to Men's Warehouse and I bought a nice shirt, some silk suspenders, and a real bow tie(not some phony clip bullshit). I gotta say I kind of enjoyed picking out what I would deem "fancy" clothes. It was way out of my wheelhouse but also very enjoyable.
So the wife and I got all gussied up, her in her nice dress and 20's era accoutrements, and me in my slacks, suspenders, bow tie, and Longshoreman's style flat cap.
As soon as we arrived at the Stanley I realized that everyone had dressed in amazing attire, as good as I felt I was dressed I was probably in the bottom 20% in terms of formal attire. It was an amazing vibe being there waiting for the band with 20's era music playing and 300 people dressed to the 9's in period costumes.
Needless to say the atmosphere of this show was nothing short of phenomenal.
On to the band and the music.
Murder By Death is one of my absolute favorite bands and are a rare breed in that they get better with every album they put out. Their keep evolving to the point that with each new album I keep thinking there is no way they can top what they previously did, and yet they somehow do.
This concert was a celebration of the 10th anniversary of one of their earlier albums, which they aged in its entirety along with another 15+ songs from newer albums.
This was one of the top 4 live music experiences I've ever had. This was one of 4 concerts that truly moved me an emotional way. The other three were a Pogues concert and two Flogging Molly concerts.
The sound was crystal clear and the song selection was perfect. A great mix of old and new songs.
The greatness of this experience overrides the fact that I will have to wake up in less than 6 hours and drive 4 hours home so I can watch tomorrow's game with my son who would be heartbroken if I didn't make it. Yes, tomorrow morning will suck but what I just witnessed and what I will witness tomorrow with the greatest 9 year old boy that God ever saw fit to give life to, will make it all worth it.
An amazing night which I'm sure will be followed by an amazing and victorious day, this could end up being an all time greatest ever weekend. I'm stoked.
