I Google'd some lists and sometimes CCR is there and other times they're not. The Eagles, Doors, Beach Boys, Earthwindandfire(I hate them so much), are always on the list. Given how huge Nirvana is now, those are my top four. #lazy analysis. As much as I hate to say it, Aerosmith is worthy of consideration, too.
I don't see a good case for Earth Wind Fire over many other American bands, but I've also only ever heard like September or whatever I think.

CCR, Nirvana, Eagles, Doors, Beach Boys are all good shouts. Aerosmith is also a good shout, along with Guns N' Roses, Metallica, and RHCP. My hot take is maybe it's time to start putting Weezer in the discussion.

I feel like all of those bands have a good case in terms of popularity, longevity, and Americanness. If you play each of these band's 10 most popular songs, how many would be recognizable to the average person?

Given that the old guard is dying, RHCP, Nirvana must be in! EWaF are slated as one of the most popular bands in both the country and the world. I also think the fact that their music is...sigh...trying to be 'nice' eclectic helps the case. Looking at sheer popularity, The Eagles have to be in. I dunno. This conversation is more enjoyable than I thought it would be.

I have almost finished my list of T-Sizzle.

It's interesting because "American" culture is diverse and unique, making it an open-ended discussion. Also because most of the greatest American music artists are solo artists. Whereas there is a pretty concrete and inarguable top 3 or 4 British bands. America 1, Dave 0

To be honest, British music is just low-end American music at this point.

There's a reason the British invasion bands wanted to be American so bad!

5 - Shake it off. It's a horribly positive for the sake of being positive song. However, the sheer blunt force instrumentality of the song cannot be denied. It will put you in a better mood. Even if you don't want to be.

4 - Willow. It feels so distinctive when weighed against most of her songs. Aside from the horrible "90's trend," line, which somehow works as a juxtaposition itself, there's a somber tone to it, which is another juxtaposition. It is...saying something worth saying.

    3 - Bad Blood - shit's just a banger. Simple as that.

2 - Wildest Dreams - The hindsight line is probably one of the better lines in pop music history.

1 - Style. My favorite song of hers by far. Quick answer: it's a vibe.

If I had to pick I'd choose Metallica

To me they're the quintessential American band in a quintessentially American Genre. We could dive into the minutiae of what bands stole from who and where that originated or where this trend "REALLY" started etc. but if you ask anybody my age "Best metal band" or "who invented metal?" Most people who understand the questions will say Metallica. I don't think any other American band wins that sort of contest in their particular genre by such a wide margin.

I'd have a hard time not putting the Eagles in the #1 spot.

I like Metallica enough to entertain the idea, NGL, but for me they have two bodies of work and the quality is too uneven.

Personally, I've gotten a lot more mileage out of my Pixies albums. They would be my favorite American band.

I have never listened to the Pixies. I think I should, just to learn something.

Good lord. I have Jane's Addiction a micrometer ahead of them, but they're better than all of the Seattle sound.

“When we do find that guy, we’ve got to have the continuity on the offensive side to where we can train him and develop him and get him there. This is our fourth offense in probably three or four years. Quarterbacks need to be developed. You don’t find one ready-made. We got to have a solid system in place for when we do go after whatever guy it may be, a young guy or a trade or whatnot.”
