Ever since their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame I’ve been revisiting live performances by NIN. Their Woodstock ‘94 performance is an all-timer for me, particularly this song:

My first time hearing this gem. This band is seriously overlooked.

Imagine it's your first concert in over a year and you get to see Dave Chappelle sing Radiohead with Foo Fighters.

Without hesitation Beastie Boys/Run DMC is #1. 2 is a bit trickier, but I think I'd go with Tom Petty.

Strong agree on #1.

#2 is wide open though.

The Petty show would have been rad for sure.

Also, the Dead would have been a fantastic show. I'm not a fan. But when you average A+ concert with B/B- music, it's compelling.

Depeche Mode jumped out at me as the easy #2, but this was pre- Violator. An excellent show. All of the 101 material. This is probably the obvious choice. At this point their catalogue is more than enough for any given show.

If it was a Cult/Cure show, I might be interested. Rush and Yes both sound like quality shows, see my comment about Dead above. But then factor in how amazing Yes and Rush are.

Madonna I bet was the actual best show, but maybe not.

Hard pass on Waters and "Pink Floyd", each was so much worse separate.

Duran Duran/Erasure might actually be the correct answer. No shit.

It feels wrong to pass on either Huey Lewis or Iron Maiden.

I'd go with U2/Pogues. Yeah. The U2 setlist is pretty tight at this point. But the Pogues aren't quite there. Almost there. This is almost the slam dunk.

So...shit.

Bowie is at his lowest, don't want '87 Bowie. Cars...pass. Great band, great show. But pass.

I'm landing 100% on Depeche Mode 1987. This is pretty much the 101 concert, peak Depeche Mode minus Violator. Compositional genius, great attention to detail for touring, great setlist.

Bolded is the killer, the rest is filler

But they are ok as far as segue/exit material. Proper segue material can be crucial for the overall experience. This is close to an ideal concert. I wonder what the Petty and Duran Duran shows were like. The U2 show would have been A/A-, I looked at the list. They were so on point in '87.

But I'm really convinced this is the right choice, after DMC/Beastie.

I looked at the Duran Duran list. No Rio, no Girls on Film. Factor that in. Still a strong list and good show. But how would you feel if you went to the Duran Duran show and no Girls on Film and no Rio? You get Hungry and Election Day and View to a Kill and Reflex. But to me this doesn't beat the above.

I'm not sure how to factor in the Erasure part, since I was never that into them, but I am told they are about good enough to headline a show like this.

Here was the Petty setlist...has me questioning my choices.

Just as a quick example, Ballad of Easy Rider is not a Petty cut. This is a Byrds cover but it's like they knew Petty would come along later. And did Dylan make an impromptu appearance at this show? Maybe this was the one. I've heard a bit of Petty live on Spotify and think this keyboard work might be peak music...
