Default The Anubis Metal Album Review Thread

I have a few reviews that i have done in the last few years that i will post in here. Feel free to read and comment to your hearts content.

First up are what i call "Quick lick Reviews". These are ones that i find to be average to poor and dont spend a whole lot of time with. You'll see these on occasion. Any other review you see will be longer and are generally albums i like a lot or just decided to write a lengthy review for. Anyhow here are some quick licks.

Warrell Dane- Praises to the War Machine (2008)

First up is Warrel Dane's solo effort "Praises to the War Machine". First let me say this album can be enjoyable but...... there is nothing new brought to the table here. In fact, its just a watered down version of Nevermore. Its supposed to be a progressive album according to Dane. But Nevermore's work takes more risks and has far more progressive elements. Dane has been quoted as saying he wanted to take a more thrashy/songwriting direction on this project but what it features is a lot of what Nevermore does only better. In my opinion there was no need for this to be a solo effort. Warrel Dane should just take the guys in Nevermore and redo this album under the same moniker with the better talent available to him. Again, i can listen to this album without any problems as i enjoy Dane's vocals and it can be enjoyable but only a person who does not know who Dane is or his history will understand where this album is going. At the end of the day Nevermore is far better with a better quality product.

    Album rating: 6/10

    Judas Priest- Nostradamus (2008)

Ugh, why? So yea, ive listened to the new album by Priest and expected much more and instead got much less. The good news is this is Priest and Nostradamus incorporates all the styles that Priest have covered and used throughout their career. The bad news is overall its extremely weak. In fact, they could have cut this album down to about 11 songs and it would of been a huge improvement. Instead, we are subjected to 9 interludes out of 23 tracks. And out of the remaining 12 tracks we have maybe 4 songs worthy enough to stand on their own including the preview track "Nostradamus". The rest of the songs are watered down uninspired slow and methodical songs that really have no direction.

They dont know if they want to write a ballad or a complex piece of material. I understand what Priest were trying to accomplish with this record but there just isnt enough substance to carry it. The best tracks on this record are "Prophecy", "Visions", "Nostradamus", and "Future of Mankind". Other than that its all pretty average material from a group that has done much better. If there is one thing that is remotely accurate with Nostradamus, it is that he predicted this band is at the end of their run. Time to retire boys.

    Highlights
Although i have a couple of previous albums from this band i really have never sat down and given them a full and fair listen. More of drive by earful but decided to give this 4th opus a full listen. Not totally unusual with this band the music is driving and blistering technical death metal at its best. I was also unaware that there are actually 3 singers in this band which is pretty damn cool. Unlike the previous 3 albums this one seems to be more focused this time around even adding some melody in which is a huge step for them but comes out strong on the record. The musicianship is exceptional with fantastic drumming and guitar attack of Ryan and Turner with some phenomenal sweeping and riff arrangements. When it comes to making quality TDM these guys get it and are unrelentless in their campaign to conquer this carcass called earth. Some of the great highlights on here are "The Aftermath", "Antithesis", "Wrath of Vishnu", and "The Beyond Within". The fact that the band takes the extra time this round to make the songs a bit longer helps them tremendously. Whereas before you would miss the album if you sneezed which was a shame, but not this time. The speed and intensity is amazing and only continues to impress me as to the brutality that these guys can deliver.

    Problems
None. For once i can appreciate this band as a whole and love every minute of this release.

    Final Thought
This is a great band and for longtime fans they will truly enjoy this release probably more so than the previous records. For new fans especially into technical death metal this is a album you have to check out. Its that good. I saw a review a guy made making a statement like "If only Slipknot could play like this they would be good!". Im like what? Are you crazy? Dont be stupid. Now, if the guys from Slipknot wanted to be roadies im sure the guys from Origin would be ok with that. But lets try to stay off the crack when trying to even put these bands in the same sentence. Mmmmkay?

    Highlights
Having been introduced to this band by my good friend Dane i somewhat knew what to expect from this new record. However, even with that they have managed to blow me away never quite like this. They have always managed to incorporate heavy thrash elements into their blistering death metal sound. Unrelentless, Punishing, and at times even somewhat melodic. Considering this is the newest full length since 2002 i have to say they have done a fantastic job considering the time between albums. For diehard fans this is totally worth the wait. Lyrically they are all over dealing with themes such as history, violence, and at times even racialism. But with all that said dont let their ideologies sway you from enjoying this thunderous album. In the wake of some pretty decent thrash and death releases this is right up there with me so far in 2008. Unlike most death metal bands in today's era Arghoslent doesnt incorporate egyptian melodies or any gothenberg style riffs that seems to be the fad of today's death metal scene.

By that same token it doesnt overly lull you to sleep or become boring with the deep pummeling guitar or drum sound of some of the standard death metal bands today. Instead, they keep it fast paced with a thrash arrangement without making it too obvious. Some of my favorite tracks off the album are "In Coffles They Were Lead", "Manacled Freightage", "The Nubian Archer", "Dog and Broom", and "Hornets of the Pogrom". The music arrangements and chemistry is perfect for what this band is trying to achieve. Vocally it is well done without overpowering the music and vise-versa. The song structure is unique in its own right and at some points on this record almost showcases technicality and progression without stepping overbounds. Despite all the controversey regarding their ideologies this is a band worth checking out. Most of their racial content is directed at historical aspects throughout history rather than say "F that N!" which is not how they write lyrically. It is much more subtle and not the only principle in which they believe.

    Problems
Obviously, if your greatly offended by racialism on any level than this may not be the band for you. But i do want to point out that it is far more subtle than the band gets credit for and is generally spoken in a historical text. Not too mention the music far outcrys some of their lyrical content.

    Final Thought
At the end of the day i love what Arghoslent has done on this record. For those who may have found the latest Death Angel release to be appealing this album absolutely crushes it as if someone was stepping on your larynx. Giving everything this band puts into their music it far outweighs some of other areas that may or may not be suitable to your ears. At the end of the day, you make the call but i highly recommend this release on the musical standards alone. In today's day and age its up to the listener to distinguish and determine what they get out of a musical release as the metal frontier is growing rapidly and crossing over in many territories both musically and lyrically.

    10. Beneath Our Skin (5:46)
    11. Untitled (1:30)

    Highlights
Wow! What a sweet surprise. I saw this album because of the excellent artwork but wasnt sure what to expect behind it. And boy, the brutality and execution of musical genius on this album is mind blowing to say the least. Nothing but total ferocity and anger sugar coated with some great keyboard atomsphere and symphonies. American has made a name for themselves in recent years with some great black metal bands but Wykked Wytch doesnt even sound american as they have a very traditional black metal sound. With some great solo work and down right screeching/growls from female vocalist Ipek. Think of what Dani Filth does only ten times better and without the high shrieks. The band at times sounds similiar to Arkhon Infaustus but only in certain elements. There is some top notch melodies and precision being played on this record.

This is the bands 4th opus and although i have not heard previous albums i may have to give them a listen. Some really great tracks on this record include "Memories of a Dying Whore", "Bloodstained Tears", "Awakened", "Suffering Through the Years", and "Shroud in Ash". There is even a blistering cover of "Sweet Dreams" on here. Far more demonic, hellish, and evil than the Manson version. For those who are enjoying the latest Veneficum release you will most certainly like what is being done on this record as well. The keyboard work is exceptional and flows very well with the outright aggressiveness of the hammering drums and guitars. The production is top notch and suits the band perfectly for the sound they are trying to portray. Some of the songs feature some great sound clips from various movies (i always like that) which gives the music its own identity.

    Problems
    None

    Final Thought
Overall im quite pleased and surprised that a band like this can come out of America but i shouldnt be. America has caught up to the European metal scenes in the last decade in terms of quality bands and music. Ive seen that this band is/was labeled a goth metal band but there is no way that is true, at least by this record. Wykked Wytch have put out a masterpiece by their own right and have Filth and boys wetting themselves right about now. WW is doing SBM the way its meant to be played.

    Summoning- Stronghold (1999)

    Origin
    Austria

    Members
    Protector- Vocals, Keyboards, Guitars
    Silenius- Vocals, Keyboards

    Style
    Atomspheric Black Metal

    Track Listing
    1. Rhun
    2. Long Lost To Where No Pathway Goes
    3. The Glory Disappears
    4. Like Some Snow White Marble Eyes
    5. Where Hope And Daylight Die
    6. The Rotting Horse On The Deadly Ground
    7. The Shadow Lies Frozen On The Hills
    8. The Loud Music Of The Sky
    9. A Distant Flame Before The Sun

    Highlights
Epic....what does it mean? How does one define something Epic? For me, its albums like "Stronghold". The emotional awareness and spiritual touch that these two individuals bring to the table is both inspiring and thought provoking. Their ability to create imagery based on the writings of Tolkien is one of the best ive ever heard. Easily the best track on the album "Long Lost to Where no Pathway Goes" is fantastic with some bleak and mournful keyboard playing along side solemn guitar riffing. The emotional despair on this album is deep and well constructed both lyrically and musicianship wise. Some of the greatest tracks on here are "Long Lost to Where No Pathway Goes", "The Glory Disappears", Like Some Snow White Marble Eyes", and "The Shadow Lies Frozen on the Hills" and those are just the best on a already great album.

Protector and Silenius use primarily the keyboards to convey their creative genius but do add the guitars and drums to good effect but without overpowering the atomspheric keyboards. There is just a overall sense of tragedy and triumph throughout this record that words simply cant explain it. There is just a right blend of texture and grimness layered with outstanding conceptual mechanics and undulating ambience. Everything works with expert cohesion and harmony throughout the album. There is also a nice added touch of female vocals at various moments to add to the overall feel.

Some people have heard me describe other albums as soundscape-esque, well Summoning is the band that set the template for me and this was the album of all albums with that feel. And although they use a drum machine it isnt set to one particular type of drumming. Oh no, they add different styles and arrangements which works beautifully with what they are trying to achieve here. Each song is so dynamic in their own right that both these gentlemen have allowed each song to tell its own story never becoming boring or repetitive. The extravagant and grandeur of this record cannot be matched even in this day and age. Sure, some come close but fall quite short of acheiveing the magnatude of what Summoning have created here.

    Problems
    Your kidding right?

    Final Thought
From the dreariness of the beginning to the grand conclusion you feel like you have just completed a fantastic journey and have overcome all that had stood in your way as a human being. No, this is not your typical black metal and no its not your typical symphonic black metal. What it is and what it will do is make you look deep within yourself to find that inner warrior facing the ongoing battle and help decipher what it is your looking for in this game called life. The music helps you explore the deep ends of your soul and give you the courage to lay waste to all that is in your path. This album will captivate you in a way that almost no other album can, "Stronghold" is a masterpiece with tranquill beauty and glory.

    Highlight
Although i have been a longtime Savatage fan this particular album was never one of my favorites so this review may or may not be overly positive. But one thing i have noticed at the onset is as time has progressed since i bought this album i have progressed as well as a listener. And even though the album is sub-titled a "Rock Opera" it really isnt the case here. But, with that said music at times does come across as a musical depending on the artist. Listening to the song "Jesus Saves" i have a new found appreciation for what Savatage was trying to create so long ago with this record. The song reminds me a lot in terms of feel and composition with that of "Bad Devil" from Townsends' "Infinity" album. Even the title track has some merit and appeal now than it did from the beginning for me. The best song on the album then and even now is "Strange Reality". This is the sound and aggression one would expect from this band.

This album is a concept album with some strong emotion and balance. The story-telling is consistent with memorable progression. Obviously, this type of record is a step away from the norm and is much more melodic then the masterpiece "Hall of the Mountain King". But it does add another and much deeper dimension for this band. When you get to the track "You're Alive" you get a very similar feeling that you would when you listen to The Who's "Tommy" opus. Its a very upbeat and rocking tune although it falls just under 2 minutes timewise much to my chagrin. Amazingly, this record has stood the test of time and doesnt sound outdated.

It seems that they have taken what they did with Gutter Ballet and extended and morphed it into what we have here. The musicianship is amazing and top notch as one would expect from this band. Criss Oliva's (RIP) guitar work is fabulous and outstanding as usual. The blend of piano pieces, melodic guitars, mezmerizing keyboards, adequate drums and bass, and somewhat restrained vocal work by Jon come together very nicely on here. Fans of bands like Queensryche, Pink Floyd, and The Who will enjoy this record as it creates a great atomsphere and is well written. The Hauntingly "Can You Hear Me Now" encompasses the many different feelings found throughout this album. I think i may have found yet another favorite on this record. My how times have changed, which i owe a lot to my wife for broadening my senses when it comes to "musical" type arrangements. I would also have to give Blaise a mount of respect and admiration for pushing me to review listen to this album again.

    Final Thought
I guess there is truth to the fact that sometimes you have to listen to an album even after some time to truly understand it. Back in 91' it was all about the straight forward metal playing that i longed for. I never knew how to appreciate an album that dared to defy or expand one's senses musically. I like to think that i continue to grow not only as a music fan but as a human being when i can re-discover hidden gems such as this. While i doubt that this will get continous play on a regular basis i have no doubt that it will continue to be a personal favorite to pull out of the bin from time to time without losing any appreciation for it. This also once again proves that this particular band was way ahead of its time when it was at its strongest. I guess its time to re-evaluate "The Wake of Magellan" again and see what else i have managed to miss as the years have passed.

    Mastodon- Blood Mountain (2006)

    Brann Dailor- Drums

    Style
    Progressive/Doom Metal

    Track Listing

    08. Hunters Of The Sky
    09. Hand Of Stone
    10. This Mortal Soil
    11. The Siberian Divide
    12. Pendulous Skin

    Highlights
If there is one band in this day and age of the so-called "new breed" of metal Mastodon are the ones who will be controlling the throne. Musically they throw everything at you that they can possibly muster. It can be melodic, bludgeoning, and extremely versatile in all aspects. This record being their 3rd full length will be the epitome of modern era "classics" that weaves all the best parts of heavy metal. Some of the best tracks on this record are "Sleeping Giant", "Capillarian Crest", "Circle Cysquatch", "Hunters of the Sky", and "This Mortal Soil".

Combining influences all over the grid from bands like Black Sabbath, Rush, Iron Maiden, and even a touch of Zeppelin all the while incorporating it with new age heavy metal with a touch of southern rock. They have created an exceptional and innovative album of the new millenia. To date this is some of the most complex music ever written by this band. Mastodon have proven with this record that their cohesion as a band is at the top of its game. Vocally Sanders and Hinds have taken a more shouted and clean approach to this record instead of the grunts which still find their way onto this record just not on a consistent basis. The riffs are excellently executed and flawless and overall sound is mixed very well on here. Funny thing about this record is right when you think you have figured it out they throw something else at you and totally blindside you with even more surprises musically.

Musically they just get it as their chemistry is superb with great guitar crunch with a jazz and classical aura. Dailor's drumming is again top notch and provides some great fills and technicality. And of course Sanders bashing the bass for good measure while encompassing his own style and versatility completes the uniqueness of this quartet. With "Blood Mountain" Mastodon have managed to create a solid contribution to the ever evolving metal scene and this record captures the enigma and essence of the great many emotions one would seek in metal music. With this record it continues to entrance me on so many levels. Every element that the band adds to this record is just one more step away from the first two albums and has shown just how much this band has grown in such a short time span.

    Problems
If there was to be any negative impact from this record (lord knows i cant find any) but some have said it to be repetitive and rehashed over and over again. Personally, i dont see it.

    Final Thought
This album flows brillantly with each song perfectly executed and blending together on a musical journey that will have been transcending many dimensions both physically and spiritually. What bands like Sabbath and Rush started Mastodon seem determined to finish sparking the new era of progressive metal. The melody and vibe on "Blood Mountain" is absolute bliss and astonishingly epic in every aspect. My only fear for their future is i dont know if they can top this achievement as they really have created one of the best albums of this decade. Time will tell i guess and we certainly have a lot to look forward too.

    08. Overture / Rex Tremendae / I Saw The World's End
    09. Salvation in Flame / Confutatis
    10. Finale: Hangman's Hymn / In Paradisum / Das Ende

    Highlights
Having followed this band from its roots it was of no surprise that they would have progressed to the level that they have. Since the recent rise of the extradinary black metal band Chthonic from Taiwan many would think that they were the top dogs of oriental black metal. Not so as Sigh have laid the groundwork for years with their ground breaking music. This band brings some very interesting elements into their music which creates a truly bizarre soundscape and symphonic compositions. But, it is all setup nicely and everything is distinguishable on every level with not clutter in the arrangements. Despite adding great atomsphere and melody the aggression is relentless and undaunting. The musicianship on "Hangman's Hymn" is top notch with riffs and solo's nothing short of amazing and astounding.

Some of the interludes and intros have a nice classical element touch to them whereas the music itself adds both symphonic and 80's thrash elements to their persona. Lyrically, its right up there with the mighty King Diamond as this is some of the best concept work ive seen and heard in a long while. Production wise it is perfect without any unecessary clutter or reverb. Every song is molded by enhancing all the elements the create and woven together flawlessly. Adding eerie laughs and atomspheric chants throughout the record only propels the album to a whole other level musically. For some it might take more than one listen to fully appreciate the overall complexity of what Sigh is trying to achieve with this record.

But for those who know of this band this is without a doubt their finest hour and they have delivered a bone crushing record at every level. With groove and melodic riffs that paralyzes the listener with utter awe, the explosive and intense measure of this record is both haunting and suffocating. Some of the best material on here are "Introitus/Kyrie", "Me-Devil", "Dies Irae/The Master Malice", and "Overture/Rex Tremendae". Sigh definitely bring their own brand of uniqueness and innovation to the table. The band has once again totally outdone themselves with triumphant musicianship, awesome symphonic chemistry, and venomous vocal deliveries. If you like black metal with a more diverse and versatile approach then this is a record you MUST check out. The dynamics and arrangements are engulfing on every level and never lose focus throughout the record.

    Problems
    None

This is one of those albums that will always keep your attention and begging for more. I has a interesting blend of elements that push every boundary musically without falling flat. This opus is one for every metal head to own even if your not a diehard black metal fan. It has a little bit for everyone as it is utterly mind-blowing and a landmark for the band. Its nice that a band like this can create a masterpiece and yet at the same time be totally original as well. This record fully engages the listener and connects to them in a unique fascinating way. Their creativity and specific musical trait is what sets them apart from a great many other metal bands.

    Highlights
Finally......i have a chance to hear their new record. It seems like ages since this band released a new record. Oh wait, it has but they have legitimate reasons Chuck's health just one of them. So here we are with "The Formation of Damnation" the brand new record from one of my favorite long standing thrash metal bands. After a intro featuring great guitar solo work we kick into high gear with "More than Meets the Eye" a nice punchy song and some quality thrash with even better outstanding solo work. Skolnick and Peterson are far better now than they have ever been but time will do that to a musician. The next track "The Evil has Landed" continues the brutal thrash attack with Chuck's vocal's more steady and focused than ever. The overall sound is very retro feeling dating back to the first 3 albums which is a great surprise. Bostaph who is filling in the role for an absent Clemente is fabulous. Why this guy doesnt get more credit as a drummer is beyond me but he is outstanding here.

The title track "The Formation of Damnation" is a blistering thunder of a song with crushing riffs and harmonic verses. Did i mention how great the solo's are? I cant get enough of them. This album is so devastating its truly beyond words. This is their best work since "The New Order" hands down. And i even enjoyed some of the later albums but this is OLD SCHOOL mother******s. Even though Death Angel's new album is great Testament just owned them again with this record. Despite the absence of some of these members you can tell exactly why the chemistry of this band (any band) is important. They havent missed a beat with each other and it speaks volumes here. Gone are the thoughts of branching out or trying new things,

Testament got back to doing what they do best. And that is creating great melodies, fantastic thrash riffs, and outstanding vocal harmonies. Songs like "The Persecuted Won't Forget" is some of the fastest shit ive heard in a long time. These guys must of found the fountain of youth because i have barely heard today's thrash bands sound this fast. If there is one thing i need before this year is out is I MUST SEE THEM LIVE AGAIN! This material in a live enviroment is going to ******* slay! Every song on here is abusive to the listener and is just unrelenting song after song. For those who love and adore the days of yore with this band this is a must pickup for you this year. Even if you buy only one cd IT MUST BE THIS RECORD!

    Problems
    NONE

    Final Thought
What can i possibly say that hasnt already been said? This is Testament at their finest. The wait has been forever but well worth it. You heard it here first, this is the ALBUM OF THE YEAR. Hands down! And there are a lot of great records i have heard this year but nothing compares to this album. Prepare yourselves, Damnation is Forming and its name is TESTAMENT bitches!

    Death Angel- Killing Season (2008)

Formed in 1982 from San Francisco, CA.

    Highlights
I had some reservations coming into this album because of the lackluster and uninspired performance of the last album "The Art of Dying". But, with the starting track off of the new opus "Killing Season" it showed much more promise. The opening track "Lord of Hate" returns the furious glory of what these guys had carved into the scene back in the 80's. Back is the thrash and energetic riffs that had been sorely missed on the last record. The next track "Sonic Beatdown" does exactly that as it keeps up the thrash onslaught. My god, its great to hear these boys having fun again! The solo work on this album is top notch and right on the money.

The song "Dethroned" starts out with a nice acoustic touch before jumping into the heavy riffs and blasting drum beats. Mark's vocals are smooth and flow very nicely on this album. The band just seems to have more direction this time around and have found the source of inspiration that they had on the first 3 records. Other great tracks on this record include "Buried Alive", "The Noose", "When Worlds Collide", and "Resurrection Machine". Hell, the whole album captures the magic this band had back in their hey day. It wouldnt be a stretch to say this is their best album since "Frolic through the Park". For once in their storied history i feel that Death Angel have finally made a complete record where every song is worthy of merit on its own.

    Problems
    Not a damn thing.

    Final Thought
Im completely enamored by what they have accomplished on this record. This could very easily go down as one of the best albums of the year but its still early. Never the less, if your a fan of the band or just in thrash in general you need to own this record. Its a breath of fresh to know that they havent forgotten the roots of true pure thrash. Major kudos to Death Angel for gracing us with another fine album.

    4. Vision And The Voice
    5. The Wrath
    6. R'Lyeh
    7. Black Sabbath (Black Sabbath Cover)

    Highlights
Already i sense a problem with this album apart from the others. PRODUCTION. I just dont feel it, and although the music isnt bad, its not stellar which is odd because usually its the older material of bands that stands out more. But in this case it cant hold my attention nor get my blood flowing like their later releases such as Litany, Revelations, or Impressions of Blood. The other problem with Sothis is it has 7 tracks listed but 3 of them are under 2 minutes in length. Granted, its an EP but why even bother putting up the other 3? To further complicate things, Vader decided that it wanted to do a cover of Sabbath's "Black Sabbath". What the **** were they thinking? Not only is it out of the band's element but its a absolutely boring and a unimaginative cover version. This was just a very disappointing output by these polish kings of mayhem.

    Problems
The obvious problem on this album isnt the music itself. Its the production quality and the music cant save it. There is just no Ooomph to the music that is created. The songs are easily forgettable and with 3 songs that are basically intro's it would be a waste of time and money to purchase this record. Plus, with the amount of songs on there they would probably charge you the full price of an album anyway.

    Final Thought
Your best bet here is too just pick up the other records which includes some of these songs but with better quality sound and production. Its a shame that such a fantastic band decided to release this turd of a record and then on top of it not put any serious thought or production behind it. True, this EP was released early in their career but this is a perfect example of needing "quality" and not "quantity".

    7. A Cold Logistic Slaughter
    8. Threading On Vermillion Deception
    9. Voracious Haemoglobinic Syndrome
    10. Descend To Extirpation

    Highlights
This is a fun album, and because its so good it is in my top 100 albums of alltime and is surely a top 10 record. This is death metal at its finest with tons of brutality and monolithic musicianship. The production on this album is great with excellent clarity of the all the instruments involved. There is an obvious Carcass influence on this record not just with the sick lyrical content but also with the outstanding guitar work presented here. The leads and soloing seems to just come out of nowhere but it actually gives the music an added dimension which propels this album from ordinary death metal to balls to the wall technical and artistic sonic domination. Top tracks include "Dead Wreckoning", "Gestated Rabidity", "The Inertia", and "Threading On Vermillion Deception" (my personal favorite).

This band has come a long way from their initial releases even though back then they were highly regarded as one of the best bands out on the market even then. They've added more technicality and have enriched their music further since their inception. They have furthered the boundaries when it comes to extreme death metal using heavy riffs and groove oriented combinations transcending a lot of bands while kicking ass and taking names. As a whole this group has advanced to another level with this record and are not afraid to experiment which give them an added versatility to go along with an already brutal sound. With great searing vocals, excellent guitar work, and bone crushing drum work Aborted have given you a glimpse of what is too come for the band. At the end of the day you can call it grindcore or just straight up death metal. It doesnt matter, this shit is sick, gory, and twisted and Aborted have severed the ties to themselves from the rest of crowd

    Problems
The Archaic Abattoir is a step away from the prior records from this band in the sense that they have added a melodic touch with a almost metalcorish sound. So it may turn off some fans who do not care or have grown tired of the melodeath movement. But those moments are small and in between some truly great death metal.

    Final Thought
There is just so much to love about this record, its got everything. Its got great musicianship, blood curdling vocals, and downright catchy songs. There are so many great elements throughout this record that there is just no way even the most diehard of death metal fan cannot enjoy. When Aborted first jumped on the scene they have gotten the reputation of being nothing but a Carcass clone, now they have taken what Carcass had started and and further refined the sound and technicality but with advanced it with more heaviness and technique. Even as i write this their follow-up can not hold a candle to this record. This is and was the defining moment for this band and it is a must for any serious death metal fan.

    Outworld- Outworld (2006)

    05. City Of The Dead
    06. The Never
    07. Prelude To Madness
    08. The Grey Tide
    09. I Thanatos

    Highlights
Its not often that i try to take on and review a power metal album as that just isnt my biggest area of interest. But this one has some progression with it and i can actually connect emotionally with it. This album features some pretty aggressive and groove laden riffs with a classic touch of simple progressive melodies. It doesnt get overly complex like straight forward progressive bands. Musically the band is sound with some excellent guitar work and fabulous keyboards. Vocally, its top notch with high clean vocal arrangements with some varying low key stuff here and there. It is important to take note that although Carpenter sounds great on the record he is no longer with the band being replaced by Carlos Zema who i understand it equally as good if not better.

I really havent heard this good of guitar playing since Petrucci when it comes to progressive styled guitar playing. Cooley is someone that prog fans should take notice of. In this day and age its easy to stereotype prog metal as being too over the top and pretentious. But Outworld steers clear of all that nonsense but keeping it all in check and making the music blend and flow like a deep blue waterfall. Some of my favorite tracks on this record are "Hell Raise", "Warcry", "City of the Dead", "The Never", "I Thanatos", and "Polar". This is definitely by far one of my favorite debuts by a progressive/power metal band. The musicians have great control and command of their instruments and they never conflict with one another as their chemistry is quite amazing. The combination in which they have created with the music here is outstanding and makes it easy for even non-prog fans to like.

    Problems
None, some really blending of styles with top notch aggression.

    Final Thought
This album is great for fans who like bands like Symphorce, with a dab of Symphony X and Into Eternity. If your someone who finds bands like Dream Theater a little to boring and over the top than definitely check out Outworld as they mix it up far more with much, much more aggression while still adding some great progressive musicianship. Even if your a diehard prog fan this is a must record for your collection as this band absolutely shines on this debut.

    06. State of Disobedience
    07. Storm Warning
    08. Messengers
    09. To Erase a Lifetime

    Highlights
After falling in love with their last opus "Drawing Circles" i couldnt wait to hear this new release. Their past effort has easily made my top 100 albums of alltime so to see how far they have come from that moment is exciting. Blending progressive compositions with a death/thrash element they create some of the best music in this genre. So here we are with "Silhouettes" which kicks off where the last album left off. The first track "Old Days Born Anew" shares a lot of the same progressions and musical arrangements that i fell in love with from the last record. Somehow this band sounds somewhat like Devin Townsend's solo efforts but with a crunchier guitar sound. And obviously the vocals are heavier although they do incorporate some nice clean vocal harmonies.

As a band they are musically sound and on point. The chemistry is great and all the instruments work together beautifully. At the 2:30 mark of the second track "The Sun's Architect" there is a nice melodic interlude with some great harmonic vocal work that matches the excellent keyboard arrangement before exploding back into the heavy guitar and drum work. The flow of the album is top notch without any uneasy moments. All the tempos are dynamic and work very well with the progression of the music laid out before you.

The one difference that this band sort of lacks is some great solo work. But it doesnt hurt the music much here and is still very enjoyable to listen too. And even though they are a progressive band the music isnt overly technical as it probably could be but again, they found a niche that works for them and it doesnt hurt the overall sound.Aside from the first two tracks some other great moments on "Silhouettes" is songs like "One Eye for a Thousand", "Storm Warning", and "To Erase a Lifetime". This album follows suit to what "Drawing Circles" laid out and although i dont think its quite as good as DC i still find it pretty enjoyable.

    Problems
I still dont like the lack of solos these guys dont incorporate into their music. I think it would bring a lot of extra spice to the mix and they certainly could take some lessons from Mastodon on how to use that element.

    Final Thought
For fans of Devin's solo efforts like "Accelerated Evolution" and "Terria" some people will find this a really enjoyable album. It has some really nice moments on it and certainly worth a listen. Not quite a perfect album but if you like progressive music with some bite than give this a spin. They still havent found their "Blood Mountain" yet but they are getting there.

    Highlights
I have to say after taking some time to browse my goods and get around to finally listening to some of my music that i havent gotten around too i have found a hidden gem in Depressed Mode's "Ghosts of Devotion". Although formed in 2005 this is the first ive heard of them and evidently this album features female vocalist Natalie Koskinen who i am familiar with seeing she also is in Shape of Despair which is another excellent band. For the most part this is your standard styled doom metal but they manage to add some excellent keyboard elements into the mix which comes out quite beautiful and tranquil, almost hypnotic. But no worries, it doesnt affect the heaviness and dread that is also incorporated into the music. Singer Salonen is the primary singer, crushing the air with his deathly growl while Koskinen adds her ghostly serenades.

Some of the more outstanding tracks on here are "Alone", "Suffer in Darkness", "Ghosts of Devotion", "The Sun is Dead", and a excellent cover of Burzum's "Dunkelheit". This album just reaks of dreariness and disdain. The bleak album artwork is just a taste of what this album has to offer. While ive read that some think that the female vocals weren't used enough i disagree. I think it is done just right without overdoing it. The nature of this album is very atomspheric almost in a funeral doom-esque approach. For me, this record brings a lot more to the table than your standard doom metal as it touches in a lot of different areas from progressive to an almost ambient touch. It definitely is a record that you can lose yourself in as your being enveloped into another dimension alltogether. If your looking for a record that gives you a sense of pessimism and utter despair than give this a spin to please your soul.

    Problems
For some this may just be a another standard doom metal album and maybe it is. But as ive mentioned a hundred times there are so many bands out there that you have to kind of pick and choose which ones you fancy best.

    Final Thought
This is one splendid and beautiful album. This is the great thing about all this extra time i have, i can go through and actually have a chance to listen to some of these records. If your a doom kind of person i highly recommend this record. Somehow it got passed by the first time but not now, now its going into my ipod for constant spinage.
