Unfortunately, my childhood dog, Pacer had to be put down today? I will miss my dog.

However, I worry about my mom, and when I move out, she will basically be all alone.

If she was open to it I would like to buy her a big dog. Obviously it would not be vicious or anything, but houses with big dogs get robbed less.

Anyone own a Mastiff or a Rottweiler?

My room mate has an English Mastiff. She's about 18 months old and weighs about 160 lbs. Great dog. Loves everyone. Has no idea how big she is and still thinks she's a lap dog, but good God she's strong. When I get her riled up and wrestle with her, my arms are welted and scratched for a couple of days.

This is her about six months ago.

We are on our 5th Rott very good dogs IMO.
I knew a man a long long time but I never knew him at all. Small in stature, big at heart but he always stood tall. In my mind he could do no wrong misunderstood all along. He worked hard all his live to get what he had. He was a little rough around the edges simple in mind but always had a kind eye for me. I will miss you Dad.

If you raise the dogs around people they will socialize alright won't they?

I just want my mom to have someone or something to look after her when I bounce out of the house. Her big and dumb lug of a son isn't very threatening at all, but I am better than......a stupid foo foo dog.

We owned a pitbull from the time she was 2 weeks old- her mom was taken when Denver enacted the pitbull laws and the owner didn't have the 8 foot fence built in time-- anyway, she was hand raised and loved her whole life and was NEVER mean in any way. But she scared people just by being there. She wished she was a lapdog her whole life. Great, great dog.

IMO raising a dog is like raising kids you get from them what you put into them.

She is an awesome dog. She's super lazy and super mellow unless you intentionally get her riled up. She never barks when the doorbell rings, unless it's my room mate's brother Trent because he screwed with her a lot when she was a puppy so she's not very fond of Trent.

Davii and I will also both tell you that Pits, if raised right, are AMAZING companions. I've been around them since I was a little kid and have never had any of them turn on me or anything like that. If you get them from the time they're a puppy or get them from someone who raised them to be soft, they'll be like any other dog.

Akitas are also great dog. My room mate has always had them. His last one, Meogi, loved to kill cats but was super friendly with people.

Right now, our Labs are exactly like our kids. A little sneaky, a lot smart, all fun and games, and full of love for everyone.

Dogs like that would be perfect. Like I said, all you need is the appearance of a big dog and people will leave you alone.

My mom hates and loathes guns like a fat man loathes diets.

    Thank you much!

A Mastiff or Great Dane would be a great dog for your mom. Danes are easy. They're a lot like Mastiffs in the personality department; very friendly, lazy, ginormous lap dogs. Spell check didn't catch ginormous. Weird.

You may also want to look at German Shepard's or Doberman.. as they are extraordinarily smart dogs as a rule.

I had a Saint with is a mastiff offshoot or vice versa and the big problem with the big dogs like that are hip issues. My Bernie thought he was a lap dog and was really graceful even at 235 pounds. NO one came into his back yard without an escort or into the house when he was inside without being greeted with a growl of warning..

You might want to contact the local PD, DEA, or other law enforcement types that use dogs many of these dogs are retired after they get older. They are well trained already..

Also may want to check with the greyhound rescue folks they are great dogs also.. We had a next door neighbor that had one "Grapes" that was a great dog just needs a decent back yard to run off steam.. with a taller fence as they are great leapers..

Unless you know the breeder personally do not buy a dog and never from a chain store..

Best to go to the animal rescue and find one that got left behind in a move.. We have lots of military that can't take animals with them to the next duty assignment.. or do not want to..

The only thing with a really large dog is space - they really need a good bit of it to be fair to them. Thats why we went with a Shiba Inu, which is basically a 30 lb Akita. We have a very small city lot, which is fenced in. A bigger dog would go nuts here, but we didn't want an ornament of a dog. The Shiba is too brave for her own good, as the breed was bred for Boar hunting, and is a great watchdog - but probably too small to actually be able to attack effectively.

You can go to this site and find out a lot about dogs and how they interact with people. It is important to get a dog that has the right kind of energy for the person that will be the pack leader.

Hey King sorry about you loss. We lost one of dogs last week and it's been tough.

The dog we still have came from the pound and she is just wonderful. She is half Aussie / half Chow and is a sweetheart unless you're trying to get into our yard without one of us around. Here growl is just flat out scary. They had a lot of history on her and she had hung out with the handlers and could tell me what her personalty was. I also got a dog for my Dad from the pound that I could have not created if I had a list of things I was looking for. Again they gave me her history and she has been the perfect companion. Best of luck with you search and again I'm really sorry for your loss.
